stopped and took pictures, and I proudly
told them that once they had drunk from
the Old Well, they would be converted. This
time, I heard no objections. After their thirst
was quenched, they raced to tag the Davie
Poplar, while I watched triumphantly.
After the show at the planetarium, we
made one more ride down Franklin Street,

boys, “I am really thinking that I will come
to college here, but I am not converted.”
To help them remember their visit, my
wife helped make a photo book, and I
penned the following poem for them:

The old Davie Poplar stands tall and true,
Proud to look down
on a sea of Carolina blue.
Thousands of students have walked
under her limbs,
Some became famous playing
on her fields and gyms.
Lean on her trunk
and have a seat at her base.
Ponder and think,
and put a heel on your face.
Relax and breathe while reading a book.
Think about your future,
then take a good look.
