H1N1, diarrheal diseases, MRSA, drug-resistant tuberculosis and malaria are on the rise
globally. Every year more than 2 million Americans develop infections in hospitals; 80,000 of
them die. Influenza kills 36,000 more. What we don’t know about these diseases can kill us.
The faculty of the Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases are working across the state
and around the world to fight these diseases, find the cures, and train the next generation.
They provide care to thousands of patients, discover new drugs to treat influenza, and test
new vaccines to protect babies in the developing world from malaria.
Recognized internationally for their achievements, Carolina faculty continue to work in the
most daunting conditions. Meanwhile, the diseases are outpacing the care for those afflicted.
Help us learn enough to stop these diseases from killing.
