the form you want it in before it degrades.”
The combination of the GLP lab and
dedicated clinical trial unit, Zamboni says,
is almost unheard of in an academic set-
ting, and it creates a tight chain of custody.
“The more people involved, the greater the
chance something can go wrong,” Zam-
boni says. “Here, the sample never leaves
the custody of our research team. The
pharmaceutical industry loves that.”
Zamboni’s expertise also extends to the
rapidly growing field of nanotechnology,
which holds tremendous promise for treat-
ing cancer. Traditional cancer drugs go
everywhere in the body and, as a result, can
damage healthy tissue along with the can-
cerous tissue they are supposed to wipe
out. “There is no way to control distribu-
tion [of these drugs],” Zamboni says.
