Desai, who made it to the top six finalists on
American Idol, came to the Triangle to record some demos
at Raleigh’s Osceola Studios. Having fulfilled his contract with American Idol, Desai is pursuing a career
as a pop singer. u Stephen Harry Milder (’08 MA)
of Carrboro has received a Fulbright Student Program Award for 2009-10. Milder, a doctoral student
in history at UNC, will travel to Germany to investigate the growth and development of the antinuclear
movement in West Germany during the 1970s. u
Craig Scott Peck (’08 AB) of Los Angeles is the new
club leader for the Los Angeles Carolina Club. u Amy
Marie Rechtiene (’08 MAT) of Mooresville has won
the national 3D curriculum competition sponsored
by Google Earth. Rechtiene, a Latin teacher at Lake
Norman High School, created A Tour of Rome Fit for
an Emperor, a virtual three-day interactive tour of
Ancient Rome with Emperor Augustus. u Daniel
Hayes Wallace (’08 AB) of Chapel Hill joined Doris
Waugh Betts (’ 54) and John Griffin Rowell (’ 83 AB)
on a panel, From Books to Movies, Plays and Musicals, at the 2009 N.C. Literary Festival at UNC. Wallace also participated in the panel New to the Scene
with J. Matthew Vollmer (’ 96 AB) and fellow Southern writer Nic Brown.

’09 Jennifer Alice Carpenter (’09 ABJM) of Raleigh has received a Fulbright Stu- dent Program Award for 2009-10 to
travel to Albania, where she will work with MJAFT!, a
grassroots organization concerned with youth education. Carpenter also will create a documentary
film about the identity of Albanian youth. u Tyler
Hansbrough (’09 AB) of Indianapolis has been
named College Basketball Player of the Decade by
Sporting News. Hansbrough, the ACC all-time leading scorer, has also received a Patterson Medal,
awarded annually to UNC’s most outstanding male
and female senior athletes. Hansbrough, the only
four-time first-team All-American and all-conference
selection in ACC history, was a first-round draft pick
by the NBA’s Indiana Pacers. u J.J. Raynor (’09 AB)
of Charlotte has received a Fulbright Student Program Award for 2009-10 to travel to Malaysia, where
she will study the impact of capital controls
imposed during the 1997 economic crisis. Raynor
served as 2008-09 UNC student body president and
as an ex-officio member of the GAA Board of Directors. u Stephanie Lewis Sanders (’09 JD) of Raleigh
has been named an associate in the area of corporate law at Poyner Spruill LLP. u Brett Cameron
Sturm (’09 AB) of Charlotte has received a Fulbright
Student Program Award for 2009-10. Strum will
travel to Germany to study German history, language
and historical preservation while teaching English as
a second language.
