Hughes Jr. (’ 44 AB), 86, of Durham; Aug. 18, 2009.
Hughes, whose career was municipal management,
was city manager of Durham until 1977. He was
president of the N.C. League of Municipalities. He
served in the Navy in WWII and, at UNC, was in
NROTC and Campus Y. He graduated Phi Beta
Kappa. u H. Edsel Hughes (’ 49 AB), 86, of
Montpelier, Vt.; July 17, 2009. Hughes retired as a
senior underwriter with a life insurance company. In
the 1980s, he served as a Vermont state senator. In
his teens, Hughes belonged to Actors Equity Union.
When he retired, he returned to professional acting,
appearing in movies. He held the rank of life master
as a tournament bridge player. In WWII, he served in
the Navy. u Linda Cobb Isley (’ 46 AB), 84, of Cary;
Aug. 25, 2009. Isley taught high school history and
was active in her church. At UNC, she was in
Valkyries and Alpha Gamma Delta. u Benjamin
Franklin Jones Jr. (’ 48 AB; ’ 52, ’ 51 MEd), 90, of
Richmond, Va.; July 25, 2009. Jones was a football
coach, most recently at the University of Richmond,
retiring in 1973. He also was athletic director. Before
he became coach, the Spiders had the longest losing
streak in the nation. The Spiders went to two
Tangerine Bowls and were ranked in the top 20 in
the nation in Jones’ tenure. He was named Coach of
the Year for District Three by the American Football
Coaches Association. He was a veteran of WWII,
serving in field artillery. After the war, he managed
and played on an Army team at Fort Bragg. He
became president of a realty company and developed several subdivisions. u Willis Holt Kimrey (’ 41
BSCOM), 91, of Huntsville, Ala.; April 8, 2009. Kimrey
retired as group manager for all Belk stores in
Alabama and Mississippi. He served in the Army in
WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart and two
Bronze Stars. u William Julian Koch (’ 45, ’ 47 AB;
’ 50 MA; ’ 56 PhD), 85, of Glendale, Ariz.; July 17,
2009. Koch received all his academic degrees at
UNC and served almost 40 years on the botany faculty, retiring in 1986 as a full professor. He wrote a
manual, Plants in the Laboratory, to help students
learn about plant diversity. In WWII, he served in the
Navy. u John Leslie Latham Jr. (’ 40), 90, of
Greensboro; July 4, 2009. Latham retired as owner
of the Triad Coin Co. Previously, he was in real estate
and construction. Latham joined the Army Air Corps
in WWII and was a group bombardier or lead bombardier on most missions. He amassed many medals
and honors during his 20-year service, including
Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, five
Distinguished Flying Crosses, seven Air Medals and
two Purple Hearts. At UNC, he was in Marching Band
and Sigma Chi and on the wrestling team. u Charles
Beauregard Lefler (’ 44), 87, of Oak Island; June 22,
2009. Lefler spent much of his life in Albemarle,
where he owned a tire center and then a dairy bar.
He was a Boy Scout troop leader and received the
Silver Beaver Award. In WWII, he was a pilot in the
Army Air Corps. u Stanley Dale Legum (’ 44, ’ 47 AB),
86, of Norfolk, Va.; July 17, 2009. Legum’s profession was financial investments. Active in his community, he was named Man of the Year by the Fraternal
Order of Police and was an active fundraiser for worthy causes, such as Operation Smile. In WWII, he
was in the Navy. At UNC, he belonged to Tau Epsilon

Mountain, Tenn.; July 29,
2009. Wolf owned a dry-wall construction company. He served in the Navy
in WWII. At UNC, he was
an All-America football
player.
Macrorie (’ 48 MA), 90, of Las Cruces, N.M.; July 11,
2009. Macrorie’s interest was providing teachers
with more effective teaching methods. He wrote a
number of books on the topic, including Uptaught
and Writing to be Read. He taught at several universities and for many years at Breadloaf Graduate
School of English, a summer program at Middlebury
College in Vermont. In WWII, he served in the Army.
u John Will Magnuson (’ 47), 87, of Cuba, Mo.; Aug.
9, 2008. Magnuson retired from McDonnell-Douglas,
an aerospace manufacturer. In WWII, he was in the
Navy. u Dr. Isaac Vaughn Manly (’ 44 BSMED, ’ 44
CMED), 86, of Raleigh; Aug. 23, 2009. Manly began
his private surgical practice in Raleigh in 1954. He
served many leadership roles at Rex Hospital, including president of the medical staff. He wrote God
Made, a book that looked at God’s creation for the
scientific community. He served in the Navy. As a
UNC alumnus, he was president of the Medical
School Alumni Association and was chairman of the
Alumni Visitors Committee. As a student, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, was secretary of the senior class,
on the freshman track team and president of the
Whitehead Society at the medical school. u Jean
Stoutenburg McCreight (’ 48 AB), 82, of Tampa, Fla.;
June 26, 2009. At one time, McCreight was an airline hostess with Capital Airlines. At UNC, she
belonged to Delta Delta Delta. u William Tecumseh
McDaniel (’ 41 BSGEO), 88, of Asheville; Aug. 28,
2009. McDaniel retired as chief engineer at the N.C.
State University Minerals Lab. He was a Navy veteran. At UNC, he played freshman football and
belonged to Sigma Gamma Epsilon. u Arlin
Langston McKnight (’ 44 CPHN), 96, of Starke, Fla.;
Aug. 10, 2009. McKnight retired as nursing director
of three Florida counties. She was chairman of the
executive committee of the Cancer Society and director of the board of the Salvation Army. She was
named Business and Professional Woman of the
Year in 1966. u Roland Lacy “Mac” McRae (’ 48,
’ 69 ABJO), 89, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; July 4,
2009. McRae served 30 years in the Air Force, then
Mass. During that
time, he served as
president of the New England Interscholastic
Wrestling Association. He was an Eagle Scout
and for many years was president and trails
chairman of the Wonalancet Outdoor Club. At
UNC, he was undefeated on the wrestling team.

of chemistry,
physics and mathematics at Groton
School in Groton,
developed and owned several businesses. In WWII,
he was a pilot and received two Distinguished Flying
Crosses, the Silver Star and other honors. He served
in the Pentagon and was secretary to the Joint
Chiefs of Staff at NORAD and an instructor for the Air
Force. u Ruby Spainhour Mills (’ 47 MAEd), 89, of
Concord; July 26, 2009. Early in her career, Mills
taught in the Charlotte schools. In Concord, she was
a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Red Cross and
the local hospital. u Margaret Moseley Moore (’ 44,
’ 46 BSCOM), 88, of Burlington; Aug. 26, 2009.
Moore spent much of her life in Alamance County,
where she was a partner in the B.C. Parker Agency, a
real estate appraisal business, and an active volunteer. At UNC, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and
belonged to Pi Beta Phi. u Arthur William “Buddy”
Morrison Jr. (’ 40), 88, of Tallahassee, Fla.; March 24,
2009. Morrison retired as director of the Florida
Department of Public Health and Environmental
Services. He was a fellow in the American Public
Health Association and served on numerous committees and commissions. In WWII, he served in the
Army as a heavy machine gunner. u Nancy Eller
Mowry (’ 49 AB), 88, of Winter Springs, Fla.; Aug. 14,
2009. Mowry was a Navy veteran of WWII and graduated from UNC on the GI Bill. She lived in Aiken, S.C.,
much of her life and was an English teacher for
many years. u Mae Wilkie Ozment (’ 48), 87, of
Charlotte; May 2, 2009. Ozment was a retired
accountant. At one time, she was town clerk of
Chapel Hill. u Robert Hinkley Parsons (’ 45 BSPHR),
84, of Middleburgh, N. Y.; July 26, 2009. Parsons
owned and operated his drug store in Middleburgh
for more than 30 years. He was a 60-year Mason. At
UNC, he belonged to Chi Phi. u Dr. James Solomon
Phelps Jr. (’ 48 BSCH, ’ 50 CMED), 85, of Charlotte;
Nov. 27, 2008. Phelps retired as a family practice
physician. He served in the Navy in WWII. u Oliver
Lamar Poole (’ 44), 87, of Gloster, Miss.; June 27,
2009. Poole played professional football for the New
York Yankees (an All-America Football Conference
team), Baltimore Colts and Detroit Lions. He also
taught and coached at the junior college and high
school levels. While he played football just one year
at UNC, he was named All-State, All-Southern
Conference and AP Honorable Mention All-America.
He served in the Marine Corps. u William Jacob
Rendleman (’ 47 LLB), 89, of Tampa, Fla.; Aug. 10,
2009. Rendleman retired from Texaco Oil Co., where
he was in marketing. A golfer, he was president and
later chairman of the board of the Southern Seniors
Golf Association. He played in the first Greater
Greensboro Open in 1938. In WWII, he was in the
Navy. u Frances Halbert Russell (’ 42 MS), 94, of
Winchester, Va.; July 1, 2009. Russell retired as a
college chemistry professor, teaching at Shenandoah
University, Marion College and Roanoke College. u
Frederick R. Rutledge Jr. (’ 44), 87, of Columbia,
S.C.; Aug. 12, 2009. Rutledge retired as manager of
Liberty Life Insurance Co. He coached youth basketball, and his teams often won the Columbia
Interfaith League Championships. In WWII, he served
in the Army in the Counterintelligence Corps. At UNC,
he was on the men’s tennis team and belonged to
Delta Kappa Epsilon. u Robert Carl Rutter (’ 41 AB),
89, of St. Louis; July 24, 2009. Rutter retired from
the law department of Monsanto Co. In the Army during WWII, he received the Bronze Star. At UNC, he
