’20s ; obituary Edward Rondthaler (’ 28, ’ 29 AB),
104, of Croton-on-Hudson, N. Y.; Aug. 19, 2009.
Rondthaler was co-inventor of the Rutherford Photo-Lettering Machine, the first photographic typesetting
device that allowed printers to break away from
three-dimensional metal typesetting. The machine is
displayed in the Smithsonian Institution. Named
chairman emeritus of the American Literacy Council,
he helped develop computer software to further the
council’s goal to make English spelling phonetic. At
UNC, he belonged to the Glee Club. Story, page 66.
’30s ; obituaries Carroll John “Jack” Atwood (’ 38
AB), 92, of Madison, Ala.; Dec. 28, 2008. Atwood
retired as marketing manager for U.S. Gypsum Co.
Active in civic affairs, he was chairman of the North
Farm Civic Association and president of the River-mont Senior Men’s Golf Association. He served in
the Navy in WWII. At UNC, he was president of Chi
Psi and a member of the track team. u Thaddeus
Joseph Daber (’ 39), 92, of Hilton Head Island, S.C.;
June 28, 2009. Daber retired as a draftsman for a
Charlotte company after 35 years. u Dr. H. Boone
Grant (’ 38), 91, of Rocky Mount; July 5, 2009. Grant
had a private pediatrics practice in Rocky Mount for
almost 50 years. He also worked with health departments and area hospitals. He was committed to historic preservation and received a major award for his
work. He was a medical officer and paratrooper in
WWII. During the Battle of the Bulge, he stepped on
a land mine, which ended his active military service.
u Dr. Thomas Franklin Henley (’ 36 BSMED, ’ 36
CMED), 96, of Laurinburg; Nov. 21, 2008. Henley
was a retired psychiatrist. A Navy veteran of WWII, he
was on the track and field team at UNC. u William
Max Lamont (’ 39), 92, of Dallas; July 3, 2009. He
retired as owner of Top of the Tableware. u William
Vernon Langley (’ 35), 94, of Staley; July 7, 2009.
Langley retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was
an Army veteran of WWII, participating in the D-Day
landing and the Battle of the Bulge. u Rosalie
McNeill Massengale (’ 39 MA, ’ 55 BSLS), 92, of
Chapel Hill; June 18, 2009. Massengale returned to
UNC to earn a degree in library science, then worked
at the UNC law library and the UNC Health Sciences
Library for 20 years, retiring in 1974. In WWII, she
was with the Army’s G- 2 military intelligence unit. Her
family established the Rosalie M. Massengale
Nature Reserve in Ashe County in her honor. u
William S. McClelland Jr. (’ 37 ABJO), 93, of Charlotte; Aug. 26, 2009. McClelland was president of a
paint company and a solvents corporation. He served
in the Army in WWII. At UNC, he belonged to Kappa
Alpha Order and Campus Y. u Kenneth Marion
Mears Jr. (’ 38), 94, of Sterling, Va.; Oct. 22, 2008.
Mears, a photographer, at one time worked for The
News & Observer. He was a combat photographer
for the Army in WWII and received the Bronze Star,
among other honors. u Ellen Alice Murchison (’ 35
AB), 95, of Rocky Mount; June 27, 2009. Murchison
retired as a trust officer of Planters National Bank
and Trust Co. u John Burrell Oliver (’ 39 AB, ’ 41 MA),
90, of Atlanta; June 25, 2009. Oliver was professor
emeritus of history at Georgia State University. In
the Navy in WWII, he served as an interpreter of
Japanese. At UNC, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa
and belonged to Glee Club. u Elizabeth Crock
Shoemaker (’ 36), 94, of Peoria, Ariz.; Jan. 26, 2009.
Shoemaker worked in real estate for a number of
years. At UNC, she belonged to Pi Beta Phi. u

right, was a
pharmacist for
45 years. She
was the first
pharmacist at
N.C. State
University
Infirmary. She
and her late twin sister, Jean Bush Provo (’ 38
BSPHR), also a pharmacist, were recognized as
Pharmacists of the Year in 1973 by the N.C.
Pharmaceutical Association, receiving the
Mortar and Pestle Award. They were the first
women to receive it. At UNC, she belonged to
Kappa Epsilon.
Jacqueline Johnson Simpson (’ 33 MA), 98, of Shaw,
Miss.; July 18, 2009. Simpson taught in the Shaw
schools and was active in her church. u Archibald
Lenox Taylor Jr. (’ 36), 94, of Oxford; Jan. 2, 2009.
Taylor had retired after numerous years as postmaster of Oxford. In WWII, he was in the Army and
earned a Bronze Star.
’40s Andy Griffith (’ 49 AB) of Manteo stars in a new film, Play the Game. Griffith plays a widowed grandfather living in a retirement home who tries to learn
how to be a ladies’ man from his grandson. u Cyrus
Baldwin King (’ 47 AB) of Raleigh has been inducted
into the Raleigh Hall of Fame. King, assistant director
emeritus at the D.H. Hill Library at N.C. State University, was honored with his wife, Carolyn S. King, for
their commitment to peace, nonviolence, justice and
respect for human rights. Story, page 62.

Richard Eustace Aiken Jr. (’ 40 BSCOM), 91, of
Elizabeth City; Aug. 30, 2009. Aiken retired as a CPA
who had his own practice for 32 years. He served in
the Navy in WWII. u Robert Mouzon Allen (’ 49 AB),
86, of Dallas; Jan. 15, 2009. Allen retired after a
long career in personnel management. In retirement,
he was copy editor for an accounting firm. He was
active in his church choir. He was in the Navy in
WWII, on duty at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed.
At UNC, he was in Glee Club. u William Irvin
“Brother” Anderson Sr. (’ 47 BSCOM), 86, of
Greensboro; July 24, 2009. Anderson retired as
owner and operator of a bookkeeping company. In
WWII, he was a pilot in the Army Air Corps. At UNC,
he belonged to Phi Gamma Delta and served as
president. u Guy Hudson Andrews (’ 46, ’ 47 AB), 86,
of Greensboro; Aug. 20, 2009. Andrews owned a
contracting company in Greensboro that helped to
develop New Hope Valley in Durham. As an alumnus,
he was president of the Rams Club at UNC. As a student, he played freshman basketball and belonged
to Beta Theta Pi and Order of Gimghoul. u James
Aubrey Applewhite Jr. (’ 48), 89, of Jacksonville; Aug.
12, 2009. Applewhite was a comptroller, most
recently for the firm of Jones-Onslow. He was past
district governor of the Lions Club. He served in the
Army Air Forces in WWII. At UNC, he belonged to
Delta Sigma Pi. u Dorothy Bates-Brown (’ 42), 89, of
Tarrytown, N. Y.; June 24, 2009. Bates-Brown spent
most of her adult life in Urbana, Ill. In W WII, she
