Students
Meghan Hunt, a junior, meets her fresh- man brother, Colton, on Sundays for
her favorite Carolina tradition: breakfast at
Ye Olde Waffle Shop.
Bob Scheppegrell ’ 88 travels to an away
football game each season with his former
UNC roommates and their sons.
GAA President Doug Dibbert ’ 70 cheers
on the Heels with his family every year at
the Carolina-Duke home basketball game.
Carolina students and alumni
cherish traditions
— personal or
formal, through
athletics, academics or other outlets — as ties to
the University. A
new book published by the
Order of the
Bell Tower and
the GAA collects
80 of the most
popular Carolina
rituals, old and relatively new, from
climbing the Bell
Tower and drinking
from the Old Well to
attending Fridays on the
Front Porch at The
Carolina Inn.
The 137-page True Blue
functions as a scrapbook for traditions and
as a resource guide about the University,
the GAA and OBT, the GAA-sponsored
student ambassadors for the University.
Katie Littlefield ’09, last year’s OBT legacy
chair, sees the book as a Carolina crash
course for new students, a bucket list for
upperclassmen and a memory book for
alumni.
“Traditions anywhere help connect present and past generations,” Littlefield said.
“Run into any alumnus anywhere in the
world, and you immediately have a few
dozen common experiences to discuss —
rushing Franklin Street after a victory
against Duke, witnessing crazy antics in the
Pit, pulling an all-nighter in the UL, peo-
ple-watching in Polk Place on football
game days.”
The book includes places for photos to
document accomplishing one of the tradi-
tions and blank pages where Tar Heels can
incorporate their own traditions. Eleanor
Morris ’55, former director of the Office of
Scholarships
and Student
Aid and current
GAA chair, said
that building
and owning
traditions is an
integral part of
the Carolina
experience.
“Etch them
into the memo-
ry — because that’s
what’s going to bring
you back,” Morris said.
Kat Butler ’07,
GAA coordinator of
student programs
and adviser to
OBT, said the
book is part of
OBT mem-
bers’ efforts
to be the
University’s tradition-keep-
ers. Members have recently revived
the once-popular alumni legacy pinning
and class ring ceremonies.
OBT will host a traditions day next
spring to help students complete about five
of the more time-intensive traditions, such
as exploring the Chapel Hill Museum,
Butler said. ;

New Book Provides Guide to Start,
Honor UNC’s True Blue Traditions
ONLINE: True Blue can be purchased online
at alumni.unc.edu/trueblue for $10 for GAA
members and $15 for nonmembers.
True Blue suggests cre- ating new traditions, such as introducing yourself to the chancel- lor, as well as honoring older ones, such as climbing the Bell Tower and drinking from the Old Well. Each tradi- tion has a place for a photo to document the accomplishment.
