of Chapel Hill; Dec. 28, 2008. Elkins had a long
career at the New York headquarters of the
Presbyterian Church USA, retiring as director of multi-
media production. He was councilman and fire and
police commissioner for the Borough of Cresskill, N.J.
He retired to Chapel Hill. He served in the Army in

Del.; April 16, 2009. Ellis taught in the Seaford
school district. After he retired as a teacher, he
established the Ellis Realty Co. He played football at
UNC before joining the Marine Corps in WWII. u Mary
Alice Eaton Ericson (’ 40 PhD), 96, of Cedar Rapids,
Iowa; April 30, 2009. Ericson was named professor
emerita at Coe College, where she was chair of the
sociology department. During her tenure, she spent
two years in Costa Rica with students from 12
American colleges studying agrarian reform. She was
named Woman of the Year by the Cedar Rapids
Women’s Equality Day Committee. u Hitt Watkins
Estes (’ 47 AB), 86, of Matthews; June 8, 2009. Estes
retired after a long career with the Royal Insurance
Co. In WWII, he was a Marine, then joined the Army
Reserve, working in intelligence. At UNC, he belonged
to Beta Theta Pi. u Norman Evenson (’ 41), 87, of
Wilmington; June 8, 2009. Evenson operated City
Furniture Co. in Wilmington until he retired in 1998.
u Robinson Oscar Everett (’ 48), 81, of Durham;
June 12, 2009. Everett, a lawyer, taught law at Duke
University law school for 51 years, through last
spring. He was chief judge of
the U.S. Court of Military
Appeals and was well-known
as the man who challenged
the state’s congressional
map before the U.S.
Supreme Court. He founded
the law school’s Center on

Charles William Ferguson (’ 45), 84, of Sherman
Oaks, Calif.; Aug. 7, 2008. At one time, Ferguson
owned a painting and contracting business. In WWII,
he served as an engineer in the Army. u Leslie
Ethler Flowers Jr. (’ 47), 82, of Cary; June 12, 2009.
Flowers worked in commercial construction. He
served in the Merchant Marine in WWII. u Anne
Carpenter Gardner (’ 43 AB), 87, of New Albany, Miss.;
May 20, 2009. Gardner was a retired insurance agent
and field representative for New York Life, which honored her for 50 years of service. At UNC, she belonged
to Chi Omega. u Grace Irby Garrett (’ 47 AB), 83, of
Hendersonville; April 15, 2009. Garrett was involved
in her church and the League of Women Voters. At
UNC, she was vice president of Chi Omega. u John
Henry Graham (’ 46 AB), 88, of Gainesville, Fla.; June
6, 2009. Graham retired as a representative for the
American Nuclear Society in Washington. He served
in the Navy in WWII and was an assistant naval

16, 2009. Harford retired from the U.S. Maritime
Administration and the trademark division of the U.S.
Patent Office. He served in the Coast Guard in WWII.

Thayer Hartman (’ 45 MSSW), 90, of Corpus Christi,
Texas; June 25, 2009. Hartman, a social worker, had
a private practice in Family Systems Therapy. During
her career she was a lieutenant commander for the
U.S. Public Health Service, working with terminally ill
patients. u Ellen Neff “Hull” Hoke (’ 43 MA), 90, of
Charlottesville, Va.; April 25, 2009. Hoke retired as
vice president of the advanced data management
unit of Aeronautical Research Associates of Princeton.
Earlier in her career, she was elected to the school
board of Charlottesville and removed due to her outspoken support of desegregation. u Thomas M. Hood
(’ 45, ’ 48 BSCOM), 86, of North Andover, Mass.; June
8, 2009. Hood retired as assistant secretary in the
underwriting department of The Andover Cos., insurance agencies. In WWII, he served in the Army Air
Corps. At UNC, he was a member of Chi Psi and

Johnston (’ 46), 85, of Corpus Christi, Texas; June 1,
2009. Johnston owned two auto dealerships in
Kingsville, Texas. In WWII, he was a radio operator on
bombers in the Army Air Corps and received the Air
Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. At UNC,

Gaines Kimbrough (’ 43 BSCOM), 87, of Alpharetta,
Ga.; June 19, 2009. Kimbrough was one of the first
CPAs to practice in the Buckhead section of Atlanta.
In WWII, he was a communications officer in the
Navy. At UNC, he belonged to Delta Sigma Pi. u Ruth
Ellis Layton (’ 43 AB), 87, of Highlands; April 11,
2009. Layton lived in New Orleans much of her life
but spent her summers in Highlands. She was a
member of Pi Beta Phi at UNC. u Wilson Knowles
“Hooty” Lewis Sr. (’ 41 BSPHR); 89, of Mount Olive;
May 15, 2009. Lewis owned and operated Lewis
Drug Co. for more than 50 years. He served on the
Wayne County Board of Education and was an Eagle
Scout. He served in student government at UNC. u
Anne Kimbrough Ligon (’ 45), 84, of Winston-Salem;
May 5, 2009. Ligon worked as a social worker for the
American Red Cross and for the Durham County
Department of Social Services. At UNC, she was in Psi
Chi. u Katharine Wicker Long (’ 40), 90, of Richmond,
Va.; June 13, 2009. Long was an accomplished
artist. At UNC, she belonged to Chi Omega. u John
David Lowe (’ 49 BSPHR), 85, of Archdale; April 19,

2009. Lowe was a pharmacist who operated drug
stores in Archdale and Denton. He served in the
Marine Corps in WWII and was wounded in the South
Pacific. u William Lawton Maner Jr. (’ 42 MA), 90, of
Williamsburg, Va.; May 19, 2009. Maner retired from
Virginia Electric & Power Co. (now Dominion Resources)
as a district manager. His fiction and poetry appeared
in national magazines, and he published five novels.
His involvement in the community included serving
as chairman of a United Way campaign and of the
Williamsburg City Planning Commission. He taught
watercolor classes to inmates in a regional jail. In
WWII, he was a communications officer for the Coast

Marston (’ 42 AB), 87, of Richmond, Va.; June 18,
2009. Early in her career, Marston was a junior high
school librarian in Hampton, Va. u Merlin Francis
“Marty” Martin (’ 43), 88, of Ellensburg, Wash.; April
29, 2009. Martin retired as manager of service facilities for General Electric in Seattle. He served in the
Army Air Force in WWII. At UNC, he was active in the
Campus Y. u Charles Byron McCraw (’ 42 AB), 87, of
New York; March 31, 2009. McCraw was a teacher,
dancer and musician. An original cast member of
Brigadoon and Pal Joey on Broadway, he also danced
with the San Carlo Opera Ballet and danced the role
of Uppowoc in Paul Green’s The Lost Colony. He taught
for many years at the High School of Performing Arts.
He served with the Navy in WWII. At UNC, he
belonged to Glee Club. u Norfleet Owen “Speck”
McDowell Jr. (’ 44 BSPHR), 85, of Scotland Neck;
June 17, 2009. McDowell, a pharmacist, owned a
family pharmacy in Scotland Neck. His civic activities
included 21 years on the town board of commissioners, 12 of those as mayor pro tem, and membership
on the board of trustees and advisers of Chowan
College. He served in the Navy as a hospital corpsman. At UNC, he was on the track team and a member of Kappa Psi. u Carroll “Sonny” Milam Jr. (’ 43),
88, of Jacksonville, Fla.; March 24, 2009. Milam was
founder of Milam Concrete Products in Cornelia, Ga.
He served in the Army and, at UNC, belonged to Phi
Delta Theta. u Gertrude Clark Miller (’ 40 MA), 94,
of Middletown, R.I.; June 14, 2009. She was a statistical assistant for an insurance company and a volunteer with the American Red Cross. u Stuart
Campbell Morton (’ 43, ’ 48 AB), 88, of Chapel Hill;
May 4, 2009. Morton retired as training director for
an insurance company. He served in the Army in
WWII and the Korean War, earning the Purple Heart
and the Bronze Star. At UNC, he belonged to Chi Phi
and the Glee Club. u Dr. Thomas P. Nash III (’ 41
AB), 89, of Elizabeth City; May 10, 2009. Nash practiced general surgery in Elizabeth City and was chief
of surgery at Albemarle Hospital. He was a flight surgeon with the Army Air Corps in WWII. Active at UNC,
he was on the staff of The Daily Tar Heel and
belonged to Gorgon’s Head Lodge, the Philanthropic
Society and Zeta Psi. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
u Joseph Kyle Orr III (’ 43), 88, of Atlanta; May 9,
2009. Orr was an investor whose companies included
Margold Margarine, Capital Cab Co. and Pot O’ Gold
convenience stores. He was once named Sports
Illustrated’s Fisherman of the Year. He served in the
Army. u Dr. Harold D. Padgett Jr. (’ 42 BSGEO), 90,
Albuquerque, N.M.; May 26, 2009. Padgett was a
general practitioner. He took part in rifle and handgun
competitions. u John James Parish (’ 46), 86, of
Wendell; April 27, 2009. Parish was in the Navy for
22 years, serving in WWII and the Korean War. He
was commander of a squadron of minesweepers.
