Agency at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala. At
UNC, he lettered in swimming. Max Arland Harris
Sr. (’ 54 BSBA), 76, of Charlotte; Sept. 26, 2008. A
banking executive, Harris was corporate executive
vice president of First Union Corp. when he retired. In
the Army, he worked in the finance section of the
personnel department. He served on numerous committees in his church and also served his alma
mater, including on the Board of Visitors in the ’80s.
At UNC, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, belonged to
Beta Gamma Sigma and was on the baseball team.
Robert Clarence Harris (’ 51), 80, of Elkin; Oct. 27,
2008. Harris had a long career with Chatham
Manufacturing Co., retiring as scheduling manager of
the manufacturing area. After high school, he was a
pitcher for the Chatham Blanketeers semi-pro baseball team. In 1948, the team finished as runners-up
in the Semi-Pro National Baseball Championship.
The team won two games in that competition and
lost none. Later, he signed with the New York
Yankees, assigned to the Norfolk, Va., AA league. He
was a military policeman in the Army in the early
’50s, stationed in Germany. George Maurice
“Sonny” Hill Jr. (’ 52 BSBA), 77, of Morganton; Sept.
16, 2008. Hill had a varied career that included
housing contractor, owner of an oil company and
part-owner of a truck stop. He also held licenses in
insurance and real estate. He was co-chairman for
the fund drive to build the Burke County Rescue
Squad building. At UNC, he played in the Marching
Band and belonged to Kappa Alpha Order. Robin
Ledbetter Hinson (’ 58 JD), 77, of Charlotte; Oct. 13,
2008. Hinson was a longtime lawyer in Charlotte,
most recently a partner at Robinson, Bradshaw &
Hinson, and specialized in banking, mergers and
acquisitions and corporate law. He was the founder
and teacher of the N.C. Bar review course for 20
years and received the UNC School of Law
Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1992. He served on
the Law Foundation and on the Board of Visitors for
11 years. He served in the Navy before enrolling in
law school. Among his honors as a student, he was
elected editor-in-chief of
The North Carolina Law
Review and was inducted into the Order of the Golden
Fleece and Order of the Coif. Upon graduating from
law school, he was hired as an assistant professor
and assistant dean at the school. He was chairman
of the board of the Foundation for the Carolinas and
was on the boards of Charlotte Speech and Hearing
Center and Crisis Assistance Ministry. Harry M.
Hobbs Jr. (’ 52, ’ 56 BSBA), 78, of Winston-Salem;
Sept. 16, 2008. Hobbs retired as plant manager of
an industrial products manufacturing company in
Charlotte, then moved to Concord and to Winston-Salem last year. He interrupted his studies at UNC to
serve in the Navy in the Korean War. Charles
Tayloe Hoyt Jr. (’ 55 ABEd), 75, of Jacksonville; Oct. 8,
2008. Hoyt was assistant superintendent of Onslow
County Schools for 28 years and planned and
directed the building programs for 17 new schools
and additions and renovations at 17 other schools.
He taught extension classes for East Carolina
University and taught summer classes on the ECU
campus. He served for many years as an official for
the Coastal Plains Horse Show Association and
served four years with the Marine Corps. At UNC, he
belonged to Phi Gamma Delta. John Wheeler
Humphrey Sr. (’ 54), 76, of Augusta, Ga.; Sept. 27,
2008. Humphrey retired from a business-equipment
supply company as branch manager. He served in
the Army. Roy Gilbert Hundley Jr. (’ 58 MEd), 81, of
St. Petersburg, Fla.; July 15, 2008. Hundley was on
the inaugural faculty of Dixie Hollins High School,
where he taught biology. Later, he taught marine biology at St. Petersburg Junior College. After retiring, he
was a seasonal park ranger at Mammoth Cave
National Park. In WWII, he was in the Navy. At UNC,
he belonged to Phi Delta Kappa. J.D. Hurst (’ 52,
’ 53 AB; ’ 55 LLB), 84, of Kannapolis; Sept. 28, 2008.
Hurst practiced law in Kannapolis for more than 50
years and was honored by the N.C. State Bar and
UNC School of Law for his service. While attending
UNC, he helped organize the Victory Village Day Care
Center and served as chairman of its first board of
directors. He was honored at the 1998 opening of
the center’s new facility. He served 11 years in active
duty with the Navy and 11 years in the Navy Reserve.
In WWII and the Korean War, he was a communications specialist, deciphering secret intelligence communications. John Bright Jernigan (’ 53, ’ 54
BSBA), 77, of Madison, Ala.; Sept. 22, 2008.
Jernigan retired from the Air Force. At UNC, he
belonged to Phi Gamma Delta. Herman Eskridge
Jones (’ 50 BSCOM), 83, of Clayton; Aug. 15, 2008.
Jones served three terms as mayor of Clayton and
before that was on town council. He worked for the
federal Flue-Cured Tobacco Stabilization program for
35 years. He served in Europe in WWII, then attended UNC. He was a member of AFROTC. Edward
Bischoff Kemm (’ 57), 74, of Conway, S.C.; Oct. 7,
2008. Kemm had a diversified career that included
running several radio stations and constructing the
Virginia International Raceway. Later, he moved to
Baltimore and was active in the tire business and
served on the National Tire Dealers Association. He
was a private pilot and worked with the Virginia Civil
Air Patrol. After retiring to South Carolina, he
remained active in the investment business. James
Edward Kennerly (’ 52 MEd), 84, of Naples, Fla., Oct. 3,
2008. Kennerly was CEO of Lea Manufacturing Co. in
Waterbury, Conn. He was on the board of the
Middlebury Police Department, where he was a commissioner. He served in the Navy in WWII. June
Crockett Keys (’ 50 AB), 79, of Greensboro; Oct. 3,
2008. Keys worked for Jefferson Standard Life
Insurance Co. in its human resources department.
Along with her husband, she was a founding member
of Faith Presbyterian Church. At UNC, she belonged
to Delta Delta Delta. Andrew Milton Kistler II
(’ 57), 74, of Morganton; Aug. 21, 2008. Kistler was
retired president of Stoney-Kistler Insurance. He
served six terms as mayor of Morganton and was
president of the N.C. League of Municipalities, chairman of the Governor’s Advocacy Council and chairman
and executive committee member of the Western
Piedmont Council of Governments. He served in the
Army Reserve and, at UNC, belonged to Sigma Phi
Epsilon. Charles Thomas Kivett (’ 55 LLB), 81, of
Greensboro; Sept. 11, 2008. A lawyer, Kivett practiced law in the 1960s, then held positions as solicitor of Municipal County Court and district solicitor
and was a Superior Court judge (1969-83). At UNC’s
law school, he was a member of the Law Review.
T. Henry Knott (’ 52 BSBA), 79, of Greensboro; Sept.
25, 2008. Knott retired from Fieldcrest Cannon as
manager of payrolls and investor relations. He worked
for the company for more than 35 years. In the
Korean War, he was in the Air Force. At UNC, he
belonged to Kappa Sigma. Dr. James Louis DeLay
Lamm (’ 50 AB, ’ 55 MD), 78, of Mount Airy; Sept. 1,
