find what they truly love.
“If they don’t know what they want to
do, send them here,” Ashby invited.
Sporting Chances
True Blue Fanfare, held late afternoon in
front of the Smith Center, celebrated all
things sports, and turned all things into competitions. The Clef Hangers staged a contest
for tying bow ties, the a cappella group’s
signature adornment. Guests lined up for the
Cash Cube, a chance to enter a narrow glass
booth to grab faux greenbacks swirling
inside. There was a basketball shoot-out,
before men’s basketball Coach Roy
Williams ’ 72 arrived, and an air guitar contest in which Dave VanHook ’ 94 (MA) was
a finalist.
VanHook of Chapel Hill and his young
daughter had practiced Guitar Hero on a
demo model at an electronics store. “It was
the highlight of my day,” said VanHook,
whose wife, Amy Strong ’ 94 (MA, ’00 PhD),
stayed in the audience with the stroller. “It
would have been more of a highlight if I
had known the song.”
The DJ and the free pizza brought out
the under- 30 and student crowd. The mobile
science station and face-painting artists drew
even younger participants who bit into
Carolina blue-frost-ed cupcakes and
collected team
posters. Rameses
posed for pictures
with fans of all
ages, including
Susan Spragg ’ 78
from Fort
Lauderdale, Fla. She
was squired by her
father, Dick Spragg,
who at 87 wanted
to see campus
again. Had there been a contest for oldest
date, she said, she would have won.
Carolyn Glasgow ’ 71 and Doug Glasgow
’ 72 of Salisbury had been going nonstop
since the chancellor’s breakfast that morning.
They’d taken the walking tour; listened to
former history professor Jim Leutze talk
about the state of the world in his “What the
Heel’s Going On?” seminar; had lunch at the
hospital where Carolyn, who also earned a
certificate in medical technology from
UNC in 1972, worked as a nurse; taken in
the basketball memories presentation and
toured the basketball museum. Later that
evening, they would attend a reception at
Kappa Kappa Gamma, Carolyn’s sorority.
Saturday would be a tailgate party, the football game, basketball game and a get-together with friends at the end of the day.
“You have to have a massive amount of
energy to do everything,” Doug said as he
went off to pick up a couple of free
grilled-chicken sandwiches.
The Scents, the Sights
The Saturday morning drizzle dried up
just as the first buffets went up for pregame
tailgate parties. When the first fans wandered into the hedge maze around the Bell
Tower to find their affinity groups, the sun
was serving up a perfect day for football.
Other lines formed to climb the Bell
Tower, for face-painting and for samples of
Carolina cologne. Woodsy, UNC senior
Stefanie Barish pronounced the scent. The
$60 price was steep, but she liked it enough
that “I’d collect free samples,” she said.
Katherine Long ’ 83 flew in from Seattle
to meet up with a group of former Daily
Tar Heel staff. Back in the day, she worked
the DTH’s state and national desk; she came
to the tailgate reunion as the education
editor at The Seattle Times. She arrived
Thursday night, and after the chancellor’s
breakfast Friday
morning, she’d hit
the ground running: She is training for a half
marathon and
squeezed in a 10-
mile run.

to run when I was a student.”
In the past 24 hours, she had caught up
with former DTH-ers and other friends at
old hangouts and new — Linda’s Bar, He’s
Not Here and coffee at The Carolina Inn.
Even though all of her colleagues in
journalism had been feeling beleaguered of
late, “just seeing people and talking to them
and sharing experiences has been wonderful,” she said.
