An unforgettable feature of the
stacks is the glass floors, lit from
below. Since load-bearing features
of the building were built into the
book stacks, parts of the floors
could be of the lighter material,
which reduced the need for hot
and damaging incandescent lighting.
The old card catalogs add to the
richness of the N.C. Collection.
They are still in use, since slightly
more than 10 percent of the collection isn’t yet on line.
