(’ 94 AB) of Raleigh has been elected board chairman
for Artspace, a nonprofit visual art center in Raleigh.
Poole is executive counsel for the N.C. Office of the
Governor.

Dr. Henry Amin Azar (’ 94 MA, ’ 98 PhD), 80, of
Chapel Hill; July 26, 2008. Azar, who was 71 when
he received a doctorate in medical history, was considered the oldest doctoral degree recipient in the
UNC System. He focused on the transfer of medical
knowledge from Moorish Spain to Medieval
Christendom. A physician, he retired as a professor
of anatomical pathology at the University of South
Florida and was chief of laboratory services at the
James A. Healy Veterans Hospital. His last book
was Ibn-Zuhr: The Sage of Seville. He served as
president of the Arthur Purdy Stout Society of
Surgical Pathologists and presented courses at
national and international conferences. He served in
the Navy. Noel Francis Castle Jr. (’ 94 MSW), 39,
of Durham; July 28, 2008. Castle was a licensed
clinical social worker in the Triangle. David
Richard Zyzak (’ 94, ’ 93 MA), 43, of Midwest City,
Okla.; June 29, 2008.
’ 95 Brent Andrew Altemose (’ 95 MSENV) of
Raritan, N.J., has contributed the chapter, “Safety and Health Training – Cost
Analysis and Budgeting” to the new Safety Professionals Handbook, published by the American Society of Safety Engineers. Altemose is president and
principal consultant for SABRE Health & Safety LLC.
Chris Barnes (’ 95, ’ 99 AB) of Durham has been
named assistant vice president, business banker at
First Citizens Bank in Chapel Hill. Joshua
Thomas Elliott (’ 95 BSCH) of Cary has joined Brinks
Hofer Gilson & Lione as a partner in the law firm’s
Raleigh office. Elliott focuses his practice on patent
law matters relating to biochemistry and biotechnology. Dr. Samuel Wayne Jones (’ 95 MD) of
Chapel Hill has been appointed an assistant professor, department of surgery at UNC. Gary John
White (’ 95 MSENV) of Kansas City, traveled to
Rwanda in summer 2008, where he met actor Ben
