Philip Walters Allen (’ 68, ’ 69 AB; ’ 72 JD), 62, of
Reidsville; Aug. 15, 2008. Allen retired as a judge in
the N.C. District Court. He was an elementary school
teacher, a lawyer in Caswell County, an assistant district attorney in the 17th Judicial District and a district attorney for Judicial District 17A, which covers
Caswell and Rockingham counties. William
Francis Pritchard (’ 68 EdD), 89, of Greenville; July
19, 2008. Pritchard’s teaching career included principalships at Moyock, Windsor and Conway high
schools. He was a professor of education at East
Carolina University for 16 years and retired as professor emeritus in 1984. A lifetime whittler, he sold his
pieces at juried craft shows in Rocky Mount, Halifax,
Elizabeth City and Williamston. He served with the
Navy in the Pacific in WWII. William John Schmidt
(’ 68 PhD), 79, of Asheville; Aug. 8, 2008. Schmidt
taught in Tilton, N.H., and Beaver Dam, Wis., before
being named director of Camp Dudley in Westport,
N. Y., in 1974, a post he held for 20 years. He expanded the Camp Dudley scholarship program, which was
named the William J. Schmidt Annual Scholarship
Fund in 2004. After retiring from Camp Dudley, he
taught for 10 years at the Asheville School.

’ 69 H. Paul Dove Jr. (’ 69 MSLS) of Winns-boro, S.C., has retired as dean of library
at Francis Marion University, where he

from a single book in 1971 to a collection of
400,000 volumes. Nancy Jane Farmer (’ 69 ABEd,
’ 70 MEd, ’ 82 EdD) and her husband, Dr. A.
Everette James Jr. (’ 59 AB), of Chapel Hill have
been inducted into the Riddick Society of N.C. State
University. Farmer directs the Principals Executive
Program at UNC and served on the GAA Board of
Directors from 1997 to 2001. Susan Owens
Klapper (’ 69 ABEd) of Chapel Hill has been named
interim executive director at N.C. Hillel. Klapper,
immediate past president of the board of directors
for N.C. Hillel, recently retired as assistant director
of undergraduate admissions at UNC. Julian
Mann III (’ 69 BSBA) of Raleigh has been named to
fulfill the remaining two years of an unexpired term
on the N.C. Bar Association board of governors.
Mann is chief administrative law judge in the Office
of Administrative Hearings.

William James Allran III (’ 69 AB, ’ 72 JD), 61, of
Cherryville; June 15, 2008. Allran was a lawyer and a
former attorney for the City of Cherryville. He worked
for the state of North Carolina in the Gaston County
district attorney’s office. The Jim Allran Tri County Bar
Association Golf Tournament was established in his
honor. He was an Eagle Scout. At UNC, he was in the
Marching Band. Dr. James David Bruning Jr. (’ 69,
’ 77 DDS), 60, of Statesville; June 17, 2008. Bruning
was a retired dentist. He served in the Navy. Henry
Turner Drake (’ 69 JD), 65, of Wadesboro; July 30,
2008. Drake practiced law in Wadesboro for more
than 40 years. His community activities included
serving as president of the Industrial Basketball
League, the Industrial Softball League and the Pop
Warner Football Program. He also coached Little
League baseball. He served as an Anson County
commissioner (1988-93) and was the county school
board attorney (1976-88). He was president of the
Anson County Bar Association and served on the
Sandhills Regional Mental Health Board. Jack
Andrew Lindsay (’ 69 MSBA), 77, of Hickory; June 24,
2008. Lindsay retired as personnel director for the
city of Hickory. He served in the Army in Korea. He
was a member of Toastmasters International Clubs
and received awards from Toastmasters in Virginia,
Maryland and North Carolina. L. Reece Trimmer
(’ 69), 73, of Pittsboro; Aug. 19, 2008. Trimmer
helped raise the bar of legal training for law enforcement officers and was legal adviser to the Durham
Police Department, the N.C. Justice Academy and the
Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
