Ted Murray Culp (’ 61), 71, of Pineville; July 31,
2008. Culp retired as a reservationist with Eastern
Airlines. A. James Early III (’ 61 BSBA), 69, of
Charlotte; Aug. 16, 2008. Early retired as senior vice
president and corporate tax director of First Union
Corp., where he worked from 1977 to 1991. Upon
graduation, he was a CPA and worked in Raleigh with
Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co. An Eagle Scout, he
was a Boy Scout leader and founded and was head
coach of the Charlotte Striders track club. At UNC, he
was a member of Sigma Nu. Frances Scott
Nichols (’ 61 AB), 69, of Richmond, Va.; Aug. 20,
2008. Nichols was an accomplished golfer and tennis player who won the Louisiana State Junior
Doubles Championship. She served on the board of
directors of the Charlottesville, Va., Symphony. At
UNC, she was a member of Pi Beta Phi. Richard
Shaw Stevenson (’ 61 AB), 69, of Evergreen, Colo.;
June 16, 2008. Stevenson was vice president of
Asian operations for Energy Resources International.
During a career with the Agency for International
Development in the U.S. State Department, he was a
consultant in Kenya, Tunisia, Pakistan and the
Philippines. He volunteered with the state
Department of Wildlife.

Homer Glenn Hall Jr. (’ 62 BSPHR), 73,
of Asheboro; July 9, 2008. Hall spent 35 years as a
registered pharmacist with Eckerd’s in Asheboro,
Greensboro and Thomasville. He served in the Army.
At UNC, he was a member of Phi Delta Chi. Hattie
Rodwell Johnson (’ 62), 99, of Greensboro; Aug. 16,
2008. Johnson retired as a school librarian, then
worked as a librarian at Moses Cone Hospital. Earlier in her career, she was employment manager for
Vick Chemical Co. Among her many civic leadership
positions, she was a charter member and officer of
the Historical Book Club of North Carolina.
George John Wirshing (’ 62), 67, of Miami; Feb. 11,
2007.

LLBJD) of High Point has published
Success in Small Business is a Laughing
Matter, a humorous approach to the ups and
downs of small business. Johnson is the retired
director of corporate governance for GET Interactive
Inc. and has served as CEO of several companies,
including Idtek, Pilot Therapeutics and Digital
Recorders.

Herman Lee Allison (’ 63 AB, ’ 66 LLB), 72, of
Cumming, Ga.; July 12, 2008. Allison retired in 2002
as a partner in Constangy Brooks & Smith law firm,
where he was a trial lawyer. He served for many
years on the board of the Atlanta Humane Society
and was a Navy veteran. Richard Dickinson
Atwell (’ 63), 66, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; Aug. 13,
2008. Atwell managed Belk stores for 30 years.
Every year, he would send a bouquet of roses to his
wife, a high school English teacher, when her class
studied Anne Bradstreet’s poem, “To My Dear and
Loving Husband.” After he retired, he became a substitute teacher. Virginia Anderson Davis (’ 63
ABEd), 67, of Morganton; July 1, 2008. Davis was
