Tar Heels Take to the Rodeo

Chapel Apples Are Champs

While the Yankees and Mets were on their way to missing the playoffs, another team was shining on New York’s diamonds. The New York City Carolina Club’s Chapel Apple Softball Squad pulled off a stunning comeback in the league tournament to win the championship.

The marathon day of softball Sept. 7 was capped by beating reigning champ Cornell 7-6. The Tar Heel team had to overcome a 6-3 deficit in the final inning. The final play was made by David Chapman ’00, who hit a solid grounder between the bases to bring home first baseman Max Lynn ’07. Gavin Maxwell ’05, facing a 2-2 count, had just hit a line drive to help tie the game and cut short some premature celebrating by Cornell, which had beaten the Heels during the regular season.

The tournament, played under a clear, Carolina blue sky, also saw Chapel Apples wins over the University of Michigan, the Michigan Business School (in extra innings) and New York University.

In the regular season ( 6-3), the Tar Heels split victories with Duke and Virginia.
