It comes as no surprise that Jeff and
Marnie face their challenges with dignity
and courage.
I hope the UNC family will continue
to rally around Jeff and Marnie with financial, emotional and other support.

‘Living Writers’ Program
Applauded As ‘Fantastic Gift’
The Living Writers program is a fantastic gift to UNC and the Chapel Hill community.
I hope it will foster creative writers in
this generation and beyond.
I was fortunate enough to learn under
the guidance of Doris Betts and Daphne
Athas as well as great journalism professors
during my years in school there.
It’s exciting to know the creative spirits
of other writers will be encouraged.

Nourish’s Roots,
And Its Reach
Thank you for covering Nourish in the
recent Carolina Alumni Review (
September/October 2008). The word has gotten
out about our program, and I am deeply
excited about that.
In the spirit of constant improvement,
the article would have been strengthened
with two additional points:
Nourish grew out of the Campus Y, an
organization that is near and dear to many
Carolina alumni. They would be happy to
know of Nourish’s roots and that the Campus Y is as vibrant today as it ever was.
Nourish is now a national movement
that is scaling. It is exciting to see a Carolina
model being replicated around the country,
and Nourish needs Carolina support:
www.nourishinternational.org/support.
I think these changes would bring the
Carolina community closer together.

Correction
Bland Simpson ’ 70 is a stalwart of the
English department, indispensable to the
creative writing program — and currently
persona non grata in the math building.
In his companion piece to the “Pillars
of Wisdom” feature on campus columns
in the September/October issue, Simpson
counted four magnificent Corinthian
columns fronting Wilson Library. There
are, in fact, a slightly more magnificent
six.
