Graves (’ 75 PhD) of Corinth, Texas, has been
named dean of the College of Business
Administration at the University of North
Texas. Graves joined the college as a professor
and chairman of the accounting department in
2002 and became associate dean for academic
affairs in 2007. Thomas Warren Ross Sr.
(’ 75 JD) of Davidson delivered the commencement address at UNC-Greensboro. Ross is
president of Davidson College and a former
Superior Court judge. As a justice, he was
responsible for a major revision of sentencing
guidelines for the N.C. court system. James
Andrew Wynn Jr. (’ 75 ABJO) of Raleigh was
the keynote speaker for the Founder’s Day celebration at Elizabeth City State University.
Wynn is a judge on the N.C. Court of Appeals
and chairman of the judicial division of the
American Bar Association.

Billie Smith Allen (’ 75 MEd), 79, of Oxford;
Feb. 29, 2008. Allen taught school in Granville
County for 16 years. She was a county school
supervisor for more than a decade. Joseph
Dore III (’ 75 PhD), 58, of Belfast, Maine;
Dec. 25, 2007. John Moncure Mordecai
(’ 75 MRP), 63, of Baltimore; March 27, 2008.
Mordecai was a budget analyst for the city of
Baltimore. During his career, he worked with
the Baltimore Regional Planning Council
developing regional transportation systems. He
also helped develop regional health plans for
the Maryland health department. He worked
in Navy intelligence in the Vietnam War and
received the Bronze Star. Jean Ann Wolhar
(’ 75 BSBA), 55, of Raleigh; March 2, 2008.
Wolhar worked for the N.C. Attorney
General’s Office in consumer affairs.
’ 76 W. Robert Bizzell (’ 76 BSPHR)
of Kinston, president of Realo
Discount Drug Stores Inc., has
been appointed to an at-large position on the
N.C. Fisheries Commission. William Pew
Brandon Jr. (’ 76 MPH) of Charlotte has
received the 2008 Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award. Brandon, the Metrolina
Foundation Distinguished Professor of public
policy on health at UNC-Charlotte, is known
on campus for his mentoring philosophy, with
an emphasis on treating graduate students as
colleagues from whom their teachers can also
learn. Philip Chester Cooley (’ 76 MS) of
Hillsborough has been appointed an RTI
International Fellow. Cooley is principal scientist and director of bioinformatics whose
recent work has focused on the design and
implementation of disease transmission models
to support establishing a national pandemic
response plan. Thomas Francis Darden
II (’ 76 AB, ’ 92 MRP) of Raleigh, CEO of
Cherokee Investment Partners, has raised $200
million to start the Cherokee Special Situation Fund. The fund will target brownfield
investments (clean-up and redevelopment of
contaminated properties) in China, Japan and
other countries in the Far East. James
Matthew Yates Jr. (’ 76 BSBA, ’ 79 JD) of
Raleigh has received the Outstanding Board
Member Award from the Triangle chapter of
the American Red Cross. Yates, managing
partner of Wyrick Robbins Yates & Ponton
LLP, is the board treasurer and finance committee chair for the Triangle chapter of the
American Red Cross and honorary chair of
the Clara Barton Society.

Larry Dean Carswell (’ 76), 54, of Chapel
Hill;April 19, 2008. While attending UNC,
Carswell started Lily Pad Waterbeds, one of the
first waterbed furniture stores in the area.
After opening several stores, he expanded the
business to include a full line of home furniture. Diane Hedgecock (’ 76, ’ 75 MSPH),
63, of Herndon,Va.; March 8, 2008.
Hedgecock was an international health professional whose career included the Peace
Corps, teaching and work with a private consulting firm. She served for five years in Niger
with the Peace Corps and then became director
of health programming and training for the
Peace Corps headquarters in Washington. She
was responsible for health policy and program
development in 67 Peace Corps countries. In
the early ’80s, she joined the University of
Arizona College of Medicine’s department of
community and family medicine, providing
health services to rural Hispanic communities.
She joined the Washington firm of John
Snow Inc. to help advance maternal and child
health internationally. She received the Sidney
S. Chipman Award from the UNC School of
Public Health for her contributions to maternal and child health. Jane Keenan
Starnes (’ 77 MSLS), 58, of Austin, Texas;
March 21, 2008. Starnes retired as a librarian
and information specialist from Portland
(Ore.) Community College. She was an
expert seamstress and quilter. Dr. Anna
Louise Williams (’ 76 AB, ’ 80 MD), 53, of
Washington, D.C.; March 3, 2008. Williams
was a radiologist with Center Radiology in
Washington.
’ 77 Mark Thomas Greene (’ 77
MA, ’ 79 PhD) of Catharpin,Va.,
has been inducted into the Legal
Marketing Association’s Hall of Fame. Greene
is chief marketing officer at Nixon Peabody
LLP. D. Brian Hargrove (’ 77, ’ 79 BFA) of
Los Angeles has received the John L. Haber
“Habey” Award for outstanding contribution
to the arts. Hargrove is a producer, writer,
composer, director and actor whose production and writing credits include the TV series
Wanda At Large and Titus. Story, page 47.
Michael Thomas Harvey (’ 77 AB) of
Raleigh has published an article, “Don’t Let
Your Work Become a Commodity,” in
Intercom, the magazine of the Society for Technical Communication. Gary Lee Hassell
(’ 77 BSBA) of Greenville has been named
national sales manager for Janus Development
Group, providers of SpeechEasy, a portable
device to help people who stutter speak more
fluently. R. Graham Williams Jr. (’ 77
ABJO) of Union, S.C., has been elected chairman of the Union County (S.C.) Tourism
Commission. Williams is managing editor of
The Union Daily Times and vice president of
the Union County Arts Council.

Kathy Joy Hill (’ 77 BSBA), 53, of Beaufort;
Feb. 15, 2008. Hill was technical systems manager for the N.C. Marine Fisheries. She served
on the town council at Sunset Beach in the
’80s. Marti Lynn Todd (’ 77 BSN), 52, of
Durham; March 2, 2008. Todd had a 27-year
career in mental health and parish nursing,
including as clinical case manager at Carolina
Healthcare Systems. She traveled to Venezuela
on medical mission trips.
’ 78 Gary Renn “Bear” Glisson
(’ 78 BSPHR) of Nashville, N.C.,
has been re-elected board chair of
United Drugs for a third term. Glisson, the
owner of Ward Drug Co. in Nashville and
Healthwise Pharmacy in Greenville, served on
the GAA Board of Directors (2004-05).
Sharon Vanhook Morrissey (’ 78 AB) of
Rockingham has been named president of
Richmond Community College in Hamlet.
’ 79 Kenneth Lee Burgess (’ 79
ABJO) of Raleigh has been
selected as the 2007 National Volunteer of the Year by the Jessie F. Richardson
Foundation for his work in helping to raise
money for the renovation and expansion of a
shelter for homeless seniors in Jinotepe,
Nicaragua. In addition, money raised by
Poyner & Spruill, where Burgess is a partner,
will help ensure the facility’s stability and train
abandoned street children in services they can
