navigator in WWII. Penny Hartman Bost
(’ 55 ABEd), 73, of Birmingham, Ala.; Feb. 10,
2008. Bost taught in the Winston-Salem City
School System. At UNC, she belonged to Pi
Beta Phi and graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
Charles Lee Brackett Jr. (’ 51), 81, of
Timberlake; May 4, 2007. Brackett retired as
superintendent of maintenance at Duke
University. Previously, he worked for Wright’s
Machinery and Crown Aluminum. He was a
Scoutmaster for nine years. He was a Marine
and served in WWII. Wilbur Young
Bridgers (’ 50 BSCOM), 80, of Greenville,
S.C.;April 18, 2008. Bridgers retired as senior
vice president of Bank of America. He was
active with many community groups in the
Greenville area; the teen center at the Caine
Halter Family YMCA and the Pendleton Place
Children’s Shelter were dedicated in his name.
He served in the Army. At UNC, he was a
member of Alpha Kappa Psi. Thomas
Sherman Bryan (’ 50 AB), 79, of Chapel Hill;
April 3, 2008. Bryan retired as a lieutenant
commander from the Navy, where he was a
naval aviator. At UNC, he was in the first
graduating class of NROTC. Lyle Lewis
Campbell (’ 52), 77, of Moore Haven, Fla.;
Oct. 19, 2007. Gertrude Sowell Clarke
(’ 50), 87, of Carrollton, Ga.; April 28, 2007.
William Grimes Clark III (’ 55, ’ 56 AB), 74,
of Tarboro; March 30, 2008. Clark was chairman of Clark Industries, a farming and investment business. He served in the Air Force. He
was active in many community organizations
and was president of the UNC Educational
Foundation during the building of the Dean
E. Smith Center and helped create Family
House, a temporary residence for families of
patients at UNC Hospitals. He served on the
UNC Board of Visitors (1979-83 and 2001-
05). At UNC, he was a member of AFROTC
and Delta Kappa Epsilon. William Curtis
Charles (’ 57 BSGEO, ’ 60 MS), 77, of Lake
Charles, La.; March 28, 2008. Charles was a
retired engineer with Schlumberger Offshore
Services and a member of the American
Petroleum Institute. He served in the Navy in
the Korean War. Jane Dicks Connelly (’ 58
AB), 95, of Chapel Hill;April 22, 2008.
Connelly worked in the political science
department at UNC, then at various universities in the Washington, D.C., area. In WWII,
she served in a secret communications unit in
the South Pacific with the Women’s Army
Corps, rising to the rank of captain. She later
was a civilian employee of the Army, working
in special services, which provided education
and recreation for troops worldwide. She lived
in Korea after the war, where her husband was
a lawyer and diplomat helping rebuild the
country’s legal institutions. Frances Abee
Corley (’ 57 AB), 72, of The Villages, Fla.; Feb.
27, 2008. Corley retired as a special education
teacher. Her activities in Florida included participation in The Villages Clown Alley and a
storytelling guild in Lady Lake. Charles
William Crone (’ 52 AB), 77, of Mount
Olive; Dec. 14, 2007. Crone retired as president
of his own ad agency, which won several Cleo
awards. Among his many community activities,
he was chairman of the county library board,
the school board and the Johnston County
Morehead Selection Committee. He was
named Man of the Year in Clayton in 1969.
At UNC, he was active in Christian Youth
Group, played football and belonged to
AFROTC. He served in the Air Force and
Air Force Reserves. Dwight Little
Cranford (’ 54 AB, ’ 60 LLBJD), 75, of
Roanoke Rapids; March 12, 2008. Cranford
was a retired Superior Court judge and lawyer
in Halifax County. He had previously been a
District Court judge and was admitted to the
state and federal bars in North Carolina and
the U.S. Supreme Court bar. Among his community activities, Cranford had served on the
Roanoke Rapids Planning Board, was a former president of the Halifax County Kiwanis
Club, the N.C. Symphony Society and the
Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce and
was former chairman of the Halifax County

Democratic Party. He served in the Army. At
UNC, he belonged to Phi Alpha Delta.
William Adams Darden (’ 58 AB), 77, of
Harrisburg; June 11, 2007. Darden retired as
president of his own insurance agency. In his
Navy career, he was selected for the Naval
Aviation Cadet Program and was awarded the
naval aviator Wings of Gold. He was an Eagle
Scout. At UNC, he played lacrosse.
Edward William Davis III (’ 54), 75, of
Baltimore; Dec. 26, 2007. Davis was a salesman for Hollywood Photo Studio. Ernest
Cornelius Deane Jr. (’ 57), 73, of Richmond,
Va.; Feb. 13, 2008. Deane was president of
Deane & Co., an ice cream and frozen dessert
freezer company. He was active in the National
Football Foundation, which promotes amateur
football as a way to develop leadership, character and academic achievement. Ben
Elbert Douglas Jr. (’ 51), 83, of Charlotte;
March 7, 2008. Douglas, a master furrier,
owned Douglas Furs. He also was involved in
commercial real estate brokerage and hotel
and motel franchising. He served with the
Army in WWII and was among the first to
enter Germany and liberate Dachau prison
camp. Forrest Edward Drum (’ 57), 78,
of Newton; Oct. 9, 2007. Drum retired as a
salesman with Catawba Sox Inc. He was a
member of the Catawba Valley Hosiery
Association. He served in the Army in the
