Joseph John Burton (’ 40 BSCOM), 88, of
Atlanta; Feb. 27, 2008. Burton retired and sold
his ad agency, Burton-Campbell Inc. During
his ownership, the agency won several Cleo
awards and he was named Ad Man of the Year
in Atlanta. In retirement, he was a freelance
writer and marketing consultant. A fly fisherman and bird hunter, he published articles
about his hobbies in The New Yorker and Gray’s
Sporting Journal. Among his civic activities, he
was on the boards of the Atlanta Botanical
Garden, Atlanta History Center and Eastern
Virginia Medical School. He was in the Navy
in WWII, serving in North Africa and the
Pacific. At UNC, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa
and was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma.
George Allen “Buz” Bush Jr. (’ 49
BSCOM), 83, of Louisville, Ky.; April 13, 2008.
Bush had a career in commercial real estate
development and used his business experience
to help many area nonprofits. In WWII, he was
a pilot in the Army Air Corps. At UNC, he
was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Order of
Gimghoul. Benjamin Franklin Carraway
(’ 49 BSCOM), 83, of Raleigh; March 10,
2008. Carraway retired as an accountant with
the N.C. Department of Health and Human
Services. He was a veteran of WWII. Hugh
Pfohl Cash (’ 40, ’ 46 BSCOM), 89, of East
Bernard, Texas; Dec. 11, 2007. He retired from
the Air Force as a lieutenant colonel and was a
college administrator and teacher. At UNC, he
was a member of Delta Sigma Pi and Phi
Delta Theta and worked for the University
Book Exchange. Dr. A. Robert Cordell
(’ 45, ’ 44 BSMED; ’ 45 CMED), 83, of
Winston-Salem; April 9, 2008. Cordell was
professor emeritus and former chairman of the
cardiothoracic surgery department at Bowman
Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest
University. A chair in cardiothoracic surgery
was established in his honor in 1995. He was a
past president of the N.C. Heart Association
and past vice president of the American Heart
Association, among other professional affiliations. He was a member of Rotary and
involved in local cultural activities. In the
Navy, he served in a MASH unit in the
Korean War. Among his hobbies, he had about
50 bonsai trees. At UNC, he was a member of
Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Kappa Kappa.
Robert Jack Cordell (’ 43), 88, of Asheville;
March 6, 2008. Cordell was a credit manager
at Biltmore Coal and Lumber and then with
Carolina Tire and Retreading. In WWII, he
was a communications specialist with the
Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and participated in D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge.
Walter Preston Dahl (’ 45), 85, of Arlington
Heights, Ill.; March 24, 2008. After Dahl retired
as a judge in Probate Court, he returned to
private practice with his son’s law firm. He was
the youngest judge elected to the Circuit
Court of Cook County at the time. He was a
Marine Corps veteran of WWII. Jeanne
Fraser Driscoll (’ 47 ABJO), 82, of Savannah,
Ga.; March 10, 2008. Driscoll was a social
worker and supervisor for the family and children’s services department. An artist who specialized in enamels, she was a longtime member of Gallery 209. She served on the boards
of the Humane Society of Chatham County
and Hospice Savannah. At UNC, she was president of Delta Delta Delta and belonged to
Valkyries. Aida Epps (’ 43 AB), 87, of
Raleigh; March 9, 2008. Epps retired as secretary to the attorney general of North Carolina.
At UNC, she was the first female to graduate
in the physical education department and, in
WWII, worked with the V- 12 Preflight program. Jack Phillips Fitzgerald (’ 44), 86, of
Sun City, Ariz.; March 18, 2008. Jane
McDonough Flynn (’ 43 AB), 86, of
Morehead City; April 2, 2008. Among her
community activities, Flynn was chair of volunteers for the Red Cross Bloodmobile and
active in her church as a senior warden and
head of the altar guild. At UNC, she was president of Pi Beta Phi and belonged to Valkyries.
Edmond T. Glidewell Jr. (’ 44), 85, of
Danville,Va.; Sept. 19, 2007. Glidewell retired
as senior vice president of Sovran Bank in
Danville. He served in the Army Medical
Services Corps in WWII and, at UNC,
belonged to Sigma Nu. Mary Kathryn
Gray (’ 43 AB), 86, of Charlottesville,Va.; April
8, 2008. As the wife of a naval officer, Gray
lived in Guam and Newfoundland and traveled
in Europe before settling in Virginia Beach,Va.
She served as president of the Naval Officers’
Wives’ Club and was active in many civic
groups, including the League of Women Voters,
Meals on Wheels and the Girl Scouts.
Louise McGwigan Hall (’ 40 AB, ’ 41 BSLS),
88, of Raleigh; March 3, 2008. Hall retired
from UNC Libraries in 1983 as head of the
humanities reference department. She joined
the library staff in 1947 and, as acting librarian
for several months in 1973, was responsible for
the library joining SOLINET, which tied it
into the national bibliographic network. She
was acting librarian of the American School of
Classical Studies in Athens, Greece, for six
months in the late ’60s. She was the first librarian elected to the University Faculty Council
and was chair of the faculty grievance committee. She received the C. Knox Massey
Award for service to UNC in 1982 and served
on the GAA Board of Directors in the mid-
’80s, representing library science alumni. While
at UNC, she was a member of Pi Beta Phi.
Donald Joseph Harris (’ 48 BSCOM), 84, of
Augusta, Ga.; March 5, 2008. Harris retired as a

corporate controller. He worked with Friden,
subsidiary of The Singer Co., and Ratheon,
among other corporations. In WWII, he served
in the Army Air Corps. At UNC, he graduated
Phi Beta Kappa and belonged to Phi Kappa
Sigma. William M. Hepburn Jr. (’ 48
BSCOM), 80, of Bristol, Tenn.; Feb. 22, 2008.
Hepburn, a CPA, retired as vice president of
finance with Beecham Laboratories. He was in
the Navy in WWII and in NROTC at UNC.
He was a member of Sigma Chi. Kenneth
Preston Hinsdale (’ 45 AB), 84, of Chapel
Hill;April 1, 2008. Hinsdale retired as executive vice president and chief actuary for
Jefferson-Pilot Corp. He was a fellow of the
Society of Actuaries and the American
Academy of Actuaries and a member of the
Greensboro Civitan Club. He served in the
Navy in WWII and the Korean War. At UNC,
he was a member of the Marching Band, the
track and field and cross country teams, and
NROTC. Harry David Holden Jr. (’ 45
AB), 86, of North East, Md.; Feb. 26, 2008.
Holden retired as a financial analyst with
General Electric. He was Scoutmaster of a Boy
Scout troop and vigil member of the Order of
the Arrow. He served in the Navy, attending its
Japanese Language School. At UNC, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and took part in track

Hughes (’ 49 AB), 83, of Asheville; March 14,
2008. Hughes retired as a senior vice president
with First Citizens Bank. Among community
boards on which he served were Asheville
Chamber of Commerce, United Way and
American Red Cross. He was chairman of the
Salvation Army Capital Funds. He served in
the Army Air Forces in WWII and was in
AFROTC at UNC. James Arthur Keiger
(’ 49, ’ 50 AB), 79, of Rock Hill, S.C.; Feb. 18,
2008. Keiger retired as senior vice president of
Rock Hill National Bank. He was chairman of
the Rock Hill Housing Authority and an
instructor for the American Institute of
Banking, among other activities. He was an Air
Force veteran. At UNC, he was on the golf
team and belonged to Sigma Chi. David
Landy (’ 49 AB; ’ 51, ’ 50 MA), 90, of
Wilmington; Nov. 6, 2007. Landy was professor
emeritus and former chair of the anthropology
department at the University of Massachusetts-Boston; he also had been chair of the anthropology department at the University of
Pittsburgh. At UNC, he received the Latin
America Institute Fellowship. He was a fellow
of the American Anthropological Association
and the American Association for the
Advancement for Science, among numerous
