It Commenced to Rainin’
Not in time to move the ceremonies inside, but just in time to reduce them to mere minutes, the skies
opened over Kenan Stadium on the morning of May 11. Keynote speaker Jessye Norman couldn’t
expose her operatic voice to the elements. But members of the Class of ’ 58 were able to walk in procession, and spirits in the grandstand were not too damp. The University registrar listed 5,631 graduates — 3,246 bachelor’s, 1,285 master’s, 372 doctoral, 580 professional degrees and 148 professional
