Linda Allen Barringer (’ 79), 50, of
Winston-Salem; Dec. 20, 2007. Barringer had a
long career with the New Philadelphia
Moravian Church Preschool. At UNC, she
belonged to Phi Mu.
’ 80 Douglas John Dempster (’ 80
MA, ’ 83 PhD) of Austin, Texas,
has been appointed dean of the
College of Fine Arts at the University of
Texas-Austin. Dempster holds the Marie and
Joseph D. Jamail Senior Regents Professorship
and the Effie Marie Cain Regents Chair in
fine arts in the department of theater and
dance. Annette Minda Fuller (’ 80 ABJO)
of Algiers, Algeria, has been named a journalism consultant with the Journalism Development Group. Fuller, who will be working in
North Africa, has started her first assignment in
Algiers. Stephen Bryan Gaskins (’ 80
ABEd) of Lumberton has been named Principal of the Year 2007-08 for Robeson County.
In addition to competing for the state title,
Gaskins won a trip to Senegal. Gaskins is in his
first year as principal at Lumberton High and
has served as a teacher and school administrator in the county since 1990. Michael John
Morketter (’ 80 AB, ’ 83 JD) of Fayetteville has
been named senior vice president of Arthur J.
Gallagher & Co., an international insurance
brokerage and risk management services firm,
where he specializes in construction and manufacturing risks. Dr. Albert James Osbahr
III (’ 80 AB, ’ 85 MD) of Hickory has been
elected president-elect of the N.C. Medical
Society. Osbahr is a specialist in occupational
medicine and family medicine/preventive
medicine at the Catawba Valley Medical Center, corporate medical director at Blue Ridge
Paper Corp., and a medical consultant and lab

Department. Laura Stuart Taylor (’ 80, ’ 79
AB) of Coronado, Calif., has been appointed a
judge on the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the
Southern District of California. Taylor is an
administrative partner in Sheppard, Mullin,
Richter & Hampton LLP and the founder of
the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program’s
special education project. Dr. Margo
Tolins-Mejia (’ 80 MD) of Minneapolis,
Minn., has received the William Carr MD
Leadership Award from Unity Hospital. Tolins-Mejia is the medical director for the hospital’s
cardiovascular short-stay unit, lead physician for
Unity’s heart catheterization laboratory, and
medical adviser for the Women’s Heart Center
at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids.

Louise Smith Brennan (’ 80, ’ 79 MA), 85, of
Charlotte; Dec. 8, 2007. Brennan was a former
state legislator representing Mecklenburg
County, serving from 1969 to 1970 and 1977
to 1984. She was Mecklenburg County
Democratic chairman in the mid-1980s and, in
the ’70s, helped found both the N.C. and
Charlotte Women’s Political Caucuses. She was
an adjunct professor of political science at
UNC-Charlotte, specializing in parliamentary
procedure. She was named Charlotte Woman
of the Year in 1982. Dr. Geoffrey William
Hilliard (’ 80 BSCH, ’ 82 MS, ’ 86 MD, ’ 86
PhD), 50, of Cary; Nov. 26, 2007. Hilliard was
a plastic surgeon at Personal Image Center in
Cary. He worked at clinics in Los Angeles and
Miami before joining the N.C. center. He
served in the Air Force Reserve.

BSBA) of Raleigh has been
named chief financial officer for
Southern Industrial Constructors/Southern
Crane. Dr. James Madison Ellis Jr. (’ 81
AB) of Asheville has joined Team Doctors
Preferred Access as president. Edward
Joseph Fritsch (’ 81 BSBA) of Raleigh has
been elected to the board of governors for
the National Association of Real Estate
Investors. Fritsch, who is president and CEO
for Highwoods Properties Inc., is chair of the
UNC Board of Visitors. Christopher
Charles Froman (’ 81 BSIR) of
Moorestown, N.J., has been named senior
vice president of sales and marketing for
Pomeroy IT Solutions Inc. Diane Veto
Parham (’ 81 ABJO) of Columbia, S.C., has
joined the staff of the S.C. Governor’s School
for Science and Mathematics as a grant writer.
Stephen Carter Parham (’ 81 BSBA) of
Greensboro has been appointed senior vice
president of sales and account management
for the Carolinas at CIGNA HealthCare.
