Fla.; April 16, 2007. Robert Allen Smith
(’ 59 ABEd), 74, of Wasilla, Alaska; Oct. 30,
2007. Smith served in the Navy three years
before entering UNC. He had a banking
career in Maryland and retired as president of
a state employees credit union. Robert
Clark Smith (’ 59 BSBA), 75, of Roswell,
Ga.; Oct. 30, 2007. Smith was owner of his
own printing company in Atlanta. Previously,
he retired as a national sales manager for the
NCR Corp. At UNC, he belonged to Delta
Sigma Pi. Thomas Garland Smothers
(’ 51), 80, of Reidsville; Nov. 26, 2007.
Smothers was president of the Smothers
Warehouse and active with the Jefferson Penn
Masonic Lodge. He served in the Army in
WWII. Helen Bowie “Pat” Stroup (’ 51
AB), 78, of Tucson, Ariz.; Nov. 4, 2007. After
graduating from UNC, Stroup worked for the
Cumberland Evening Times in Maryland. While
living in Boston, she was a clinical pastoral
care minister at Massachusetts General
Hospital. At UNC, she belonged to Pi Beta
Phi. Ellen Stewart Thomas (’ 54 BSLS),
80, of Wilmington; Nov. 15, 2007. Thomas
retired as head of the Physical Sciences Library
at Cornell University. Joseph Reid
Tulloch (’ 59), 74, of Eden; Nov. 5, 2007.
Tulloch worked for Fieldcrest Mills in
Leaksville. In the Korean War, he served with
the Army Corps of Engineers. Joseph
Compton “Jake” Walker (’ 50), 85, of Cary;
Nov. 29, 2007. Walker retired as a district
supervisor with the N.C. Department of
Revenue. In WWII, he was with the Army.
Virginia Lake Walker (’ 58 AB), 73, of
Pittsboro; Nov. 10, 2007. Charles Muir
Welling (’ 52 LLBJD), 83, of Charlotte; Dec.
10, 2007. A retired lawyer, Welling served several terms as an appointee of the governor to
the National Conference on Uniform State
Laws. During WWII, he was a member of the
Marine Corps. Kenneth Howard Willis
Sr. (’ 58), 74, of Pascagoula, Miss.; June 21,
2007. Willis was a licensed master mariner and
pilot. A Merchant Marine, he was with the
ferry division of the N.C. Department of
Transportation. Previously, he was public
works director in Pascagoula. At UNC, he
belonged to Phi Kappa Epsilon. Lester
Eugene Zimmerman (’ 55), 75, of High
Point; Nov. 15, 2007. Zimmerman had a long
tenure as a teacher in the Guilford County
School System and with Guilford Technical
Community College. He served in the Navy
for four years. An Eagle Scout, he was
Scoutmaster for a Boy Scout troop and a
member of Order of the Arrow.
’ 60 George J. Galasso (’ 60 PhD) of
Rockville, Md., has been awarded
an honorary doctorate by his
undergraduate alma mater, Manhattan College.
Galasso, a microbiologist, retired as associate
director for extramural programs of the
National Institutes of Health in 1993 and
established the Foundation for NIH.

Larry Randall Anderson (’ 60 AB, ’ 62
MSW), 69, of Hillsborough; Nov. 9, 2007.
Anderson was a clinical social worker in
Orange County. In addition, he was a ceramic
artist and co-owner with his wife of Anders

Hill Pottery and then Heart Nouveau. He was
past president of the School of Social Work
Alumni Association and a member of the GAA
Board of Directors in 1971-72. Catherine
Shankle Deaton (’ 60 MEd), 95, of Beaufort,
S.C.; Nov. 5, 2007. Deaton was a teacher and
guidance counselor in schools in North
Carolina for 44 years. Harriet Virginia
Leonard (’ 60 MSLS), 75, of Durham; Nov. 11,
2007. Leonard was the first reference librarian
at Duke Divinity School, a position she held
for 32 years. She received a master’s degree in
divinity at Yale University and, while a student,
became interested in theological librarianship.
