in his retirement. He also was named Citizen
of the Year in 1976. In WWII, he served in the
Army. Dr. Donald Edwin Bland (’ 55
DDS), 79, of Wallace; Nov. 12, 2007. Bland
retired following 50 years as a dentist. He
received the Distinguished Service Award
from the N.C. Society of Dentistry for
Children. He served in the dental corps of the
Air Force in Japan in the mid-1950s. At the
time he became an Eagle Scout at 13, he was
the youngest boy in the U.S. to do so.
Henry Erskine Bonner (’ 52 MEd), 82, of
Summerville, S.C.; July 3, 2007. Bonner
retired as superintendent of Berkeley County
schools. He was chairman of the Trident
Teacher’s College board of directors. In
WWII, he was in the Army. Thomas
Skinner Brickhouse Sr. (’ 57 BSBA), 85, of
Wilmington; Nov. 29, 2007. Brickhouse, a
CPA, retired as assistant to UNC’s vice chancellor for health sciences. He had a long career
at UNC, serving as auditor and director of
accounting. He was instrumental in his work
to help expand the School of Public Health
and the School of Dentistry. He was a Navy
veteran of WWII and the Korean War. Among
his UNC activities, he graduated Phi Beta
Kappa and belonged to Phi Eta Sigma and
Beta Gamma Sigma. Dock Ambrose
Britt (’ 52 BSBA), 82, of Wilmington; Aug.
15, 2007. Britt worked as a supervisor for
Jefferson Pilot Life Insurance. He held positions in several Southern cities. Phillip
Edward Buchanan (’ 53 AB), 75, of
Smithfield, Va.; Oct. 26, 2007. Buchanan was a
professor of English and philosophy at
Frederick College and Tidewater Community
College for 35 years. He also was co-owner of
a business in Smithfield. A trumpet player, he
led his own dance band during college. He
belonged to the Tidewater Community
Concert Band and, at UNC, was in the
Marching Band. C. Eugene Cain (’ 54
BSCH), 75, of Jackson, Miss.; Aug. 1, 2007.
Cain retired as a chemistry professor at
Millsaps College. Among his UNC activities
were track and field, Order of the Old Well,
Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Chi Sigma and
Delta Upsilon. Monroe Columbus
Campbell (’ 52), 77, of Oviedo, Fla.; Nov. 11,
2007. Campbell was a newspaper reporter,
columnist and television show host. He
became the full-time outdoor writer for the
former Jacksonville Journal. In the late ’60s, he
joined a television station as public affairs
director and on-air host of a nightly talk show.
Most recently, he hosted a weekly television
show that gave fishing tips. He was president
of the Florida Outdoor Writers Association
and inducted into the Jacksonville Sports Hall
of Fame. He was the winner of a number of
writing awards and fishing tournaments. He
served in the Army during the Korean War.
Carl Edward Chappell (’ 56), 77, of
Salisbury; Dec. 4, 2007. Chappell retired following a long career with Duke Energy. He
served in the Air Force. Samuel Furman
Covington Jr. (’ 51 ABEd), 80, of Laurel Hill;
Oct. 15, 2007. Covington was an educator,
retiring from Scotland County Schools. Earlier
in his career, he was a principal at several
schools in Richmond County. In WWII, he
was in the Navy. William Franklin Davis
(’ 57 MEd), 68, of Wilmington; Nov. 10, 2007.
Davis retired as superintendent of schools in
Kings Mountain. Previously, he was superintendent in North Wilkesboro and Stokes
County schools. He was an Eagle Scout.
Dr. William Speight Debnam (’ 51 AB, ’ 58
DDS, ’ 59 MSORT), 78, of Raleigh; Nov. 9,
2007. Debnam was a dentist, specializing in
orthodontics. He invented two widely used
orthodontic appliances. His practice was in
Portsmouth, Va., and he added offices in other
communities, including Elizabeth City, Ahoskie
and Nags Head. In the Korean War, he was in
the Navy. At UNC, he was on the lacrosse
team and belonged to Delta Sigma Delta and
NROTC. Ernest Stanhope DeLaney Jr.
(’ 52 JD), 87, of Charlotte; Nov. 17, 2007.
DeLaney, a trial lawyer, retired after 40 years
with Bell, Bradley, Gebhardt & DeLaney. He
then was of counsel for DeLaney & Sellers for
five years. He served on the Charlotte City
Council, following service in the Navy in
WWII. In law school, he was elected to Order
of the Coif. Phillip Alexander Drake
(’ 57), 72, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Dec. 15,
2007. Drake retired as vice president of a
clothing store. An award-winning swimmer,
Drake’s honors at UNC included first-team
All-America and national championships in
swimming. In 2003, he was voted one of the
Top 50 Swimmers in ACC history. He was
one of the first to swim the butterfly with the
dolphin kick. He set 10 American records and
had ACC championships in butterfly and medley relay. He participated in the 1952 and 1956
Olympic Trials. John Tabor Drew (’ 59
BSIR), 70, of Winston-Salem; Nov. 16, 2007.
Drew spent almost 40 years in the banking
business, retiring as a vice president with
BB&T. He was an Eagle Scout and, at UNC,
belonged to Kappa Alpha Order. Elizabeth
Yowell Ellington (’ 51), 78, of Greensboro;
Nov. 7, 2007. Ellington was director of volunteer ministry for the First Presbyterian Church
in Greensboro. She organized 55+, an organization for older citizens, which continues
today. Previously, she was a teacher in the
Burlington Public Schools. While at UNC,
Ellington belonged to Pi Beta Phi and was on
the staff of The Daily Tar Heel. Floyd
Hewell “Kiwi” Fanjoy (’ 57 BSBA), 72, of
Raleigh; Dec. 5, 2007. Fanjoy retired as a drug
and alcohol abuse counselor for the N.C.
Department of Corrections. Among his volunteer activities, he worked with prison inmates
to help in their transition after their release.
He was chairman of Raleigh’s minibike committee. He served in the Army and continued
in the Army Reserves. At UNC, he belonged
to Sigma Chi. Barrow Tilson Fleetwood
(’ 52 MSW), 96, of Bradenton, Fla.; Oct. 16,
2007. Fleetwood retired after 15 years as
director of social services for a hospital in
Arcadia, Fla. He served in the Army for 23
years, retiring as a colonel. In WWII, he was a
prisoner of war. He also served in the Korean
War. LaVerne Whaley Germany (’ 56
MEd), 84, of Atlanta; Feb. 17, 2007. Germany
was a retired teacher. Herbert Curtis
Gray (’ 51), 83, of Buxton; Dec. 3, 2007. Gray
was a real estate broker and a merchant. In
WWII, he was in the Coast Guard. He was
active in the Masons. John Benjamin
Gray Jr. (’ 51 BSBA), 81, of Garner; Nov. 8,
2007. Gray retired as senior vice president of
Durham Life Insurance. In WWII, he was in
the Marine Corps, serving in Guam and
China. Dr. Robert Edward Hallett (’ 57
BSCH), 71, of Winter Haven, Fla.; Aug. 5,
2007. Hallett was a physician specializing in
urology with the Gessler Clinic in Winter
Haven. At UNC, he belonged to Alpha Chi
Sigma. Nancy Bradsher Hamilton (’ 52
MA), 78, of McLean, Va.; Oct. 25, 2007.
Hamilton was co-founder of an independent
television production firm. A program for
which she was an on-air correspondent, Watch
on Washington, received an Emmy Award.
Earlier in her career, she was a teacher and
journalist, including a position as women’s
club editor of the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Dr. Daniel Bryant “Ace” Harrell Jr. (’ 56
DDS), 82, of Concord; Dec. 8, 2007. Harrell,
who graduated in the third class of the School
of Dentistry, practiced in Concord until his
l994 retirement. Active in the Rotary Club, he
was named a Paul Harris Fellow. In WWII, he
served in the Army, fought in the Battle of the
Bulge and received the Purple Heart. R.
Halstead Holden (’ 50 AB), 79, of Matthews;
Nov. 22, 2007. Holden served as town clerk of
Greensboro, after administrative positions with
Southern Bell and General Electric. He served
in the Navy during the Korean War. At UNC,
he belonged to Kappa Sigma and NROTC
and was on the track and field team. John
Calvin Isenhour (’ 51 BSBA), 77, of
Louisville, Ky.; Oct. 18, 2007. Isenhour retired
as an industry relations manager from Bell
South. He served in the Army in the Korean
War. He belonged to Lambda Chi Alpha at
