Frank Aydelotte Rice (’ 38 AB), 90, of
Arlington, Va.; Oct. 27, 2007. Rice, a linguist,
specialized in the teaching of Arabic. He
retired as a linguist and scholar at the Center
for Applied Linguistics in Washington, D.C.
Previously, he worked for the State
Department on the faculty of the Foreign
Service Institute and as a department attache
in Beirut. In the ’40s, he taught at Black
Mountain College and the College of
Charleston. In the ’50s, he taught Arabic to
employees of an oil company in Saudi Arabia.
He also was co-author of a textbook on the
Arabic language. Dr. Albert Philip Rosen
(’ 39 AB), 90, of Fair Lawn, N.J.; Nov. 18, 2007.
Rosen had a private pediatrics clinic and was a
founding member of the medical staff of Valley
Hospital in Ridgewood, serving as director of
pediatrics and receiving the first Distinguished
Physician Service Award. A hiker, Rosen
climbed on all seven continents and led hikes
in the Hudson Highland and Catskills. He
served in WWII in the Army Medical Corps
in France, England and Germany. He was on
the track team and Philanthropic Society at

Brickhouse, a CPA, retired as assistant to

Billie Farmer Corder, 73, of Tupelo, Miss.;
Oct. 23, 2007. Corder retired as a clinical
associate professor at UNC’s School of
Medicine, where she had a long career. Also,
she was adjunct associate professor of psychology at N.C. State University. She was managing editor of the N.C. Journal of Mental Health
and the author of more than 100 publications, specializing in adolescent and child suicide and group psychotherapy. She received
an award for her work with children from the
Wake County Services for Children and was
recognized with a number of national awards.
A watercolor artist, she had more than 35
one- or two-person shows at a variety of
locations in the Triangle. She was president of
the Wake County Visual Arts Association and
the Raleigh Artist Guild and docent for the
of Brevard;Aug. 15, 2007. For much of her
adult life, Schultz lived in New Orleans, where
she worked for the public library. Alta

Dec. 16, 2007. Singletary retired after 20 years
as a secretary of the UNC physical education
department. She was active in her church and
in the American Legion Auxiliary. John
David Slawter Jr. (’ 39), 90, of Dallas, Texas;
May 20, 2007. Slawter retired as chairman and
CEO of several international companies
involved with construction, mining, oil and
hotels. In WWII, he served in the military and
received the Bronze and Silver stars. At UNC,

Waynick Jr. (’ 39, ’ 40 AB), 89, of Greensboro;
Dec. 7, 2007. Waynick was an organist and
pianist in many Greensboro venues. He was
“Uncle Howie” for a weekly children’s program sponsored by Circle K, part of a trio for
local television program Melody Time, organist
at the coliseum for the Greensboro Generals
hockey team and for diners at S&W Cafeteria.
He was active with the local American
Federation of Musicians, serving as president and

2008. Craige, professor emeritus of medicine
at UNC, was the first chief of the division of
cardiology at UNC’s medical school, serving

member at UNC’s School of Nursing and
supervisor of psychiatric nursing at UNC’s

Bern and was its director of nursing. When
she was 70, she made a parachute jump with

Metzger with the creation of the W. Horace
Carter Distinguished Professorship at the
UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Carter is founder and owner of
The Tabor City Tribune and continues to write
columns for the paper. The newspaper won a
Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for a campaign against
