Pharmacy in Summerfield. The Benfields will
co-manage the store, and Monica will serve as
full-time pharmacist. J. Steven Fisher (’ 88
BSBA) of Salisbury has been promoted to senior
executive vice president of F&M Bank. Fisher
continues as general counsel and in his responsibility for retail banking, and will develop new
markets, among other strategic initiatives.

MA) of Chicago has been
appointed chairman of the
department of performance studies and promoted to full professor at Northwestern University. Johnson’s second book, an oral history
of African-American gay men who reside in
the South, will be published by UNC Press.
Douglas John Phillips (’ 89 BSBA) of Stanley
has been promoted to credit administration
officer with Bank of Granite. Phillips will be
working out of an office in the former Hickory
Daily Record building. Michael Peder
Soehnlein (’ 89 MBA, ’ 94 MSRA) of Raleigh
has received the Meritorious Alumni Service
Award from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Foundation. He is founding vice
president of the foundation’s N.C. Tar Heel
chapter and editor of the Tar Heel Log. Soehnlein also received the Daniel E. Meehan
Humanitarian Service Award from the foundation, honoring his work with his wife, Jean, for
the Oxford Orphanage and as therapeutic foster parents in association with the Methodist
Home for Children.
’ 90 Bethany Evelyn Chaney (’ 90
AB) of Carrboro has received a
North Carolina Arts Council
2007-08 Fellowship Award. Chaney is a third-generation Lebanese American with roots in
the Mississippi Delta. Her fellowship will support a nonfiction writing project exploring the
intersection of Arab and Southern cultures.

Thomasville hosted a 13-week program series,
Global Healing, sponsored by VoiceAmerica.
