Dr. Michael Jerry Lerner (’ 71 AB), 57, of
Miami; Sept. 18, 2007. Lerner was retired from
the practice of medicine, where he specialized in
internal medicine and cardiology. At UNC, he
belonged to Tau Epsilon Phi. C. Frederick
Murray (’ 71 AB), 58, of Manteo; Oct. 5, 2007.
Murray was vice president of an auto supply
company. Among his civic activities, he was
president of the Outer Banks Chamber of
Commerce. He was a master gardener and an
Eagle Scout. He belonged to Kappa Sigma at
UNC. William Henry Nifong (’ 71 MSW),
64, of Gastonia; Oct. 4, 2007. Nifong was a
retired clinical therapist for Gaston Mental
Health Center. He was an Army veteran.
’ 72 William Claud Bovender (’ 72
AB, ’ 75 JD) of Kingsport, Tenn.,
has been appointed to the Board
of Professional Responsibility of the Supreme
Court of Tennessee, representing East Tennessee. Bovender has also been appointed by
the Tennessee Bar Association to serve as chairman of the standing committee on the protection of the public from the unauthorized practice of law. Bovender is a past club president
for the Tennessee-Bristol-Kingsport-Johnson
City Carolina Club. Joseph Max Bray
(’ 72, ’ 77 BSIR) of Carrboro has received a
UNC Chancellor’s Excellence in Management
Award. Bray is an applications specialist with
UNC Information Technology Services.
Larry Dew McBennett (’ 72 AB, ’ 77 MRP,
’ 77 JD) of Raleigh has been named of counsel
with the firm of Everett Gaskins Hancock &
Stevens LLP. Johnny Lee Phelps (’ 72 AB)
of Duluth, Ga., has been named associate managing broker for the Atlanta North office of

Williams (’ 72 ABEd, ’ 73 MAT) of Chapel
Hill has received the Alumni Achievement
Award from the UNC School of Education.
Williams, head coach of the UNC men’s basketball team, was honored for his role as coach,
teacher and role model since beginning his
career as a teacher and coach at Charles Owen
High School in Swannanoa.

Janice Bolte Shotwell (’ 72 MSLS), 58, of
Williamstown, Mass.; Sept. 17, 2007. Shotwell
was an English teacher at a middle school in
Pittsfield. Previously, she was head librarian at
the Berkshire County Law Library for many
years. She belonged to the board of the
Berkshire Food Project.

AB) of Charleston, S.C., represented UNC at the inauguration of
P. George Benson as president of the College
of Charleston. Adams is a professor of surgery
at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Elizabeth Susan Taylor Block (’ 73 ABEd)
of Wilmington received the Creative Writer of
the Year Award by N.C. Sorosis, the oldest federated women’s club in North Carolina, chartered in 1896. A scholarship was named for her
and awarded to a creative writing student at
UNC-Wilmington. Block is best-known for
her books about southeastern North Carolina,
her memoirs and two books of poetry.

Fred Houk Jr. (’ 73 AB, ’ 81 JD), 56, of
Chapel Hill; Sept. 23, 2007. Houk was co-founder of Counter Culture Coffee, working
with growers to protect the environment while
producing high-quality coffee. The company
became the largest specialty coffee roaster in
North Carolina. While at UNC, he was speaker of student government and graduated Phi
Beta Kappa in the Honors Program. See In

Isley (’ 73 AB; ’ 77, ’ 76 MD), 56, of Rochester,
Minn.; Sept. 27, 2007. Isley was associate professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic College
of Medicine and a medical consultant at the
Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Previously, he was
on the faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine for 19 years.
He served in the Air Force. At UNC, he was
