What kind of sound do you get
when you put a bassoonist
and a vocalist together with a
violinist and someone who plays French
horn? One that resonates. And starting
this fall, Carolina is getting an earful.
Four students began their freshman year
with the first Kenan Music Scholarships.
The program was established in December
2006 and funded by a donation from the
William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust.
“The Kenan Foundation wanted to
give the music department a way to
recruit and retain several music students
who were extraordinary performers but
also superb all-around students with
broad skills and interests,” said Brent Wissick, head of the program.
The scholars, four each year, will
receive a full scholarship for all four years
covering tuition, room and board, student
fees and other expenses. To that, Wissick
said, the program adds an enrichment
fund that the students can use for additional experiences — doing projects away
from UNC or for master classes during
the school year.
The first four scholars were selected
from almost 200 high school students
who auditioned. Eight finalists returned
to complete a daylong audition and interview process. The final four were selected
on the basis of an established record of
excellence in music, academic strengths
and a commitment to majoring in music.
