counsel for Lowe’s Cos., has been elected to
the UNC Board of Visitors. Kathryn
Williams Gresham (’ 82 BSPH) of Wilmington, director of physician relations for the New
Hanover Regional Medical Center, has
received the YWCA Woman of Achievement
Award for Volunteerism. Jamee Osborn
Lynch (’ 82 ABJO) of Clayton has been
named North Central Regional Principal of
the Year and one of eight finalists for N.C.
Principal of the Year. Lynch, principal for the
Hodge Road Elementary School from 2001 to
2007, has been appointed principal of Sanford
Creek Elementary School. Claire Laurelis
Moore (’ 82 PhD) of Cambridge, Mass., has
been elected a fellow in the American Academy of Microbiology in recognition of her
contributions to the understanding of eukaryotic
mRNA 3’ end formation. Anne Ellington
Powell (’ 82 BSBA) of Burlington, a sales representative with Procter & Gamble, has been
elected to the UNC Board of Visitors.

recently named an editor/writer for Home

’ 83 Janet Elizabeth Hurley (’ 83
AB) of Asheville, a student in the
master of fine arts in writing program at Lesley University, Cambridge, Mass.,
has completed a writing project with fifth-grade students at Isaac Dickson Elementary
School in Asheville, Writing to Change the
World. Students wrote on the topic and published their work on a Web site, the first of
this kind set up in the Asheville City Schools
system. Matthew Alan Kenkel (’ 83
BSBA) of Scottsdale, Ariz., has been named
chief financial officer with Reel Dental Management. Margot Carmichael Lester
(’ 83 ABJO) of Carrboro has published two
new books, Be a Writer and Be a Better Writer,
designed for young writers, ages 9 to 18,
written in collaboration with her husband,
Steve Peha. Janice L. Sniker (’ 83 AB) of
Houston has been named a collections manager with the battleship Texas, a Texas state
historic site. John Anthony Waszak (’ 83
ABED) of Beaufort, a fifth-grade teacher at
Harkers Island School, has been appointed to
the Governor’s Teacher Advisory Committee.

an administrative judge for the

MBA) of Basking Ridge, N.J., president of
Centocor, a Johnson & Johnson company, has
been elected to the UNC Board of Visitors.
Randall Thomas Hill (’ 84 AB, ’ 88 MA) of
De Kalb Junction, N. Y., department co-chair
and associate professor of performance and
communication arts at St. Lawrence University, has received the 2006 Owen D. Young
Outstanding Faculty Award. Hill also is coordinator of the Native American studies program at the university. Alfred Magill Randolph (’ 84 AB) of Virginia Beach, Va., a
lawyer with Kaufman & Canoles, has been
elected to the UNC Board of Visitors.
Scott Wood Warren (’ 84 AB) of Raleigh has
been named Wake County attorney. Dr.
Stanley Rudolph Watson (’ 84 BSZOO, ’ 88
MD) of Smithfield, in practice with Horizon
Family Medicine and the physician adviser to
the case management program at Johnston
Memorial Hospital, has been named 2007
Neusiok District Distinguished Citizen by the
Tuscarora Council of the Boy Scouts of
America.

Raleigh; May 22, 2007. Franco was a pharmacist, most recently working for CVS Pharmacy.
Doris Schumann Knecht (’ 84 MS), 64,
of Chapel Hill; May 26, 2007. Knecht retired
as a software engineer. She worked for several
local companies, including Data General and
Intersolv.

Howard University College of Dentistry Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award.
Phyllis York Brookshire (’ 85 AB) of Raleigh
has been named vice president of Triangle
operations for Allen Tate Realtors. Dr.
Gary Martin Horowitz (’ 85 MD) of Springfield, Ill., has joined the faculty at Southern
Illinois University School of Medicine as an
associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology
and chief of the division of reproductive
endocrinology. Page Marsh (’ 85 ABJO) of
Raleigh, coach for the women’s golf program
at N.C. State University, has been elected to
the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame.
While at UNC, Marsh was an All-America
and All-ACC honoree and four-time team
MVP. John Atlas Pendergrass (’ 85 AB, ’07
EDD) of Cary has received the Patrick and
Janet Carlton Dissertation Research Award in
Education Leadership for his work in completion of his doctorate in education. Moyer

Dr. John Tracy Roper Jr. (’ 85 AB, ’ 90 MD),
44, of Concord; March 16, 2007. Roper was
an anesthesiologist at NorthEast Medical
Center. At UNC, he was active in Campus
Crusade for Christ and belonged to Alpha
Epsilon Delta. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa
from UNC.
’ 86 Erin DuBose Dean (’ 86 AB) of
Beaufort, S.C., a partner at Davis,
Tupper, Grimsley and Dean PA,
represented the Beaufort Business and Professional Women’s Club at the S.C. State Business
and Professional Women’s Foundation meeting.
Dean was chosen as the club’s Career Woman.
E. Jones Doughton (’ 86 AB) of Columbus, Ga., an associate pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Columbus, has received a doctor of ministry degree from the Beeson School
of Divinity of Samford University. Donald
Edward Horton Jr. (’ 86 AB, ’ 89 JD) of
Knightdale has been promoted to vice president of public policy and advocacy at Lab-Corp, a national clinical laboratory. Roger
Wayne Williams (’ 86) of Louisville, Ky., has
been named an assistant coach for the University of Louisville baseball team, working with
the pitchers. Previously, he coached pitchers as
an assistant coach at UNC for 11 seasons. Earlier this year, he helped guide the University of
Georgia to the College World Series.
