Parham retired as a buyer for a tobacco company. Benjamin Franklin Park (’ 42
ABJO), 86, of Raleigh; June 19, 2007. Park
retired as founder of his own public relations
agency and was one of the first North
Carolinians to be accredited by the Public
Relations Society of America. Previously, he was
managing editor of The Raleigh Times. He was
president of the Carolinas Chapter of the Public
Relations Society of America and the Raleigh
Advertising Club and chairman of the National
Council of Forestry Association Executives. He
served in the Pacific in the Marine Corps during WWII. At UNC, he belonged to the Glee
Club and Sigma Nu. Park and several of his
fraternity brothers drove to Washington, D.C.,
to hear President Roosevelt declare war, the
night following Pearl Harbor. William
Brady Reed Jr. (’ 41 BSCH), 87, of Spencer,
W.Va.; Dec. 26, 2006. Reed retired as president
of a local bank. Previously, he and his wife
managed a family-owned department store.
During WWII, he worked on the Manhattan
Project in Oak Ridge, Tenn. At UNC, he
belonged to Alpha Chi Sigma, Chi Phi and the
Marching Band. W. Jackson Rider (’ 49), 89,
of Kinston;April 14, 2007. Rider was a broadcast news reporter and commentator who
became co-owner of two radio stations. He
was host of a talk show, Get the Answer. For
more than 20 years, he was editor and publisher
of two weekly newspapers, the Lenoir County
News and the Jones Journal. He held many civic
positions, including founding president of the
Kinston Baseball Co., which helped bring professional baseball back to Kinston in the ’60s.
He served two terms on the Lenoir County
Board of Commissioners and was chairman of
the Kinston Recreation Commission. In WWII,
he was an armorer in the Army Air Corps.
Marion Claude “Early” Riser Jr. (’ 47 MPH,
’ 54 PhD), 92, of Tallahassee, Fla.; Jan. 2, 2007.
Riser taught health education at Florida State
University. In WWII, he was in the Army.
Ralph Fedder Sarlin (’ 45, ’ 47 BSCOM), 82,
of Greenville, S.C.; May 14, 2007. Sarlin retired
from operating Sarlin’s Department Store, then
was public accountant for Sarlin’s Business
Services. He was active in many community
activities, including chairman of the Pickens
County Planning & Development Commission,
director of the Liberty Chamber of Commerce
and patient service chairman of the Pickens
County American Cancer Society. In WWII,
he was in the Navy. At UNC, he was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi and graduated Phi Beta
Kappa. Fred Schanze Jr. (’ 44), 84, of
Jacksonville, Fla.; Oct. 10, 2006. In WWII, he
served in the Navy in the Supply Corps.
Hortense Kelley “Diddy” Seybolt (’ 42 AB),
85, of Boston; April 24, 2007. Seybolt was
president of the Junior League of Boston and a
trustee of the New England Medical Center
Hospital, among other civic activities. At UNC,
she was a Chi Omega and member of Valkyries.
Richard Whitehead Sparrow (’ 40), 90, of
Chapel Hill; June 6, 2007. Sparrow was a retired
postmaster with the U.S. Postal Service. He
was an Army veteran of WWII, serving in the
Pacific. Margaret Briggs Spearman (’ 41),
89, of Sacramento, Calif.; April 3, 2007.
Spearman retired as a teacher in the Sacramento
school system. Blaine Truesdell Stroupe
(’ 42), 87, of Charlotte; April 25, 2007. Stroupe
retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1986. In
WWII, he served in the Navy and, at UNC,
belonged to Delta Sigma Pi. Walter James
Stuart Jr. (’ 48), 80, of Alexandria,Va.; March
8, 2007. After Stuart retired from civil service,
he was president of Christendom Education
Corp., corporate arm of Christendom College,
and was an adjunct instructor at Catholic
University. He was a computer scientist and
software engineer for federal agencies, including
the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Federal
Housing Administration. He was a Marine in
WWII. Carl Jacob “Dutch” Suntheimer
(’ 42, ’ 43 AB), 87, of Pensacola, Fla.; June 14,
2007. Suntheimer ran his family’s bakery until
he retired, then taught commercial baking at a
vocational-technical school. He created the
cake for Philadelphia’s bicentennial, and he
40s
baked cakes for President Kennedy and the
Prince of Monaco, among others. At UNC, he
was captain of the football team and named an
All-American. Drafted by the Chicago
Cardinals, he was prevented from joining the
pro football team by an injury. He was also on
UNC’s track team. Dr. Edward Colmery
Sutton (’ 49 CMED), 82, of Burlington; Feb.
16, 2007. Sutton retired from the practice of
gynecology in Burlington. In WWII, he served
in the Army in France and Germany. At UNC,
he was a member of Phi Chi and a class officer.
James Aubrey Tinsley (’ 48 MA), 83, of
Houston;April 24, 2007. Tinsley retired as history professor emeritus from the University of
Houston, where he also served as associate dean
of arts and sciences and chairman of the history
department. In WWII, he was in the Navy.
Mildred Kresnik Treanor (’ 46 ABJO), 82, of
Richmond,Va.; June 4, 2007. Treanor retired
from Miller & Rhoads as an advertising executive. She was on The Daily Tar Heel staff at UNC.
George Reid Trotter Jr. (’ 48 BSCOM),
83, of Charlotte;April 26, 2007. Trotter was
co-founder of a residential building company.
After retirement, he was a leader in Charlotte’s
Civil Air Patrol unit and a volunteer with
JAARS, a technical part of a Bible translating
organization, and Missionary Flight
International. Trotter was an Eagle Scout and
served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps in
