Off to a Good Start
Before classes began in August, hun- nearly 30 were held in 18 states and
dreds of new students got a taste of Washington, D.C.
Carolina close to
home. Each year, the
GAA partners with
the UNC Office of
Student Affairs and
New Student and
Parent Programs to
host send-off receptions — often in collaboration with local
Carolina Clubs — to
bid students farewell.
Alumni shared their
memories and advice
with students and, in
many cases, their love
of barbecue. Nearly
20 receptions were
held throughout The Minneapolis-St. Paul Carolina Club held a send-off at the home of sophomore

Big City Blues
Settling into freshman year with thousands
of new faces on a sprawling campus —
that’s cake next to the experience many new grads face
four years later, amid millions
of new faces in a congested,
bustling metropolis. Thanks
to Carolina clubs, many
alumni moving to a big city
for the first time still enjoy
the part of freshman year that
made adjustment much easier: friendly
Carolina faces and an organized orientation.
In August and September, local Carolina
Clubs in six cities held “Welcome To”
events — evenings where newcomers can
meet alumni who have lived in the area and
learn how to make the city feel like home.
Last year’s “Welcome To” events — held in
Atlanta, Chicago, Charlotte, Washington,
D.C., the Triangle and New York — drew
more than 500 alumni. ■
