started law school at Carolina to learn more
about both education law and community
development law. Her service with Teach
For America, she said, will continue to have
an impact throughout her career. “I
remember in a public policy class at UNC
looking at the welfare system. It was
informative but abstract. I’d never known
anyone actually affected by the system,”
Flowe said. “As a teacher, most of my students were fourth-generation welfare recipients. I learned that the rules that govern
my life are not the rules that govern low-income, inner-city kids’ lives.”
