Heels Third in Directors’ Cup
Athletics Competition
UNC finished third in the 2006-07 U.S. Sports
Academy Directors’ Cup, marking the sixth
consecutive top 10 ranking for Carolina and
the eighth top five finish since this measure of overall
NCAA athletics excellence was started in 1993.
The Directors’ Cup measures a school’s postseason
success by combining the top 10 men’s finishes and the
top 10 women’s finishes. Carolina qualified 24 of its 28
sports for NCAA postseason competition.
Carolina has topped the Atlantic Coast Conference
in the cup competition in 12 of its 14 years. UNC is
also the only team to ever have finished first other than
Stanford, which won the competition for the 13th consecutive year.
Highlights of the postseason competitions included a
women’s soccer national
championship, a second consecutive runner-up finish at
the baseball College World
Series and a repeat trip to the
women’s basketball Final
Four.
Men’s basketball and men’s
and women’s lacrosse
advanced to the final eight
and earned fifth-place points,
men’s outdoor track and field
was sixth, and the women’s
tennis team reached the final
16 and earned ninth-place
points.
UCLA came in second to
Stanford, and following Carolina were Michigan, Southern California, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, California and
Arizona State. Duke was the second best ACC school at
11th.
Three other ACC schools finished in the Top 20 —
Virginia was 13th and Florida State was 15th. The Tar
Heels have averaged a sixth place finish over the last six
years.
“To put it in perspective, our worst finish, which was
tied for 17th in 1999, is three spots higher than Duke’s
average finish of 20, and that’s the second best in the
ACC,” said Steve Kirschner, director of sports information.
Five of the top 10 schools were from the Pac 10
Conference, two were from the Southeastern Conference and one each from the ACC, Big Ten and
Big 12.
