the tennis team, Tau Epsilon Phi and The Daily
Tar Heel staff, and he was business manager of
Tar and Feathers. He continued with tennis,
playing in numerous tournaments, including
qualifying matches at Wimbledon in the early
1950s. Dewitt Talmage Vaughan Jr. (’ 40
BSCOM), 91, of Burlington; April 27, 2007.
Vaughan retired as a purchasing agent with
AT&T. In WWII, he served in the Army Air
Corps and was in the Air Force Reserve.
Harold Jerome Wagger (’ 43), 85, of
Durham;April 22, 2007. Wagger was president
of Kramer Office Furniture Co. for more than
50 years. He was in the Army in WWII and
received the Silver Star. Susan Duncan
Westall (’ 48 AB), 79, of Red Springs; Dec. 22,
2006. Westall retired as a bookkeeper. Earlier in
her career, she was a secretary for Red Springs
City Schools and was organist for Trinity
United Methodist Church. Joseph
Gordon Whitsett (’ 41), 86, of Whitsett; Feb.
18, 2007. Whitsett was an executive with Sears
Roebuck and Co. for more than 40 years. In
WWII, he was a pilot in the Army Air Corps.
At UNC, he belonged to Phi Gamma Delta.
Donald Wright (’ 47 ABJO), 82, of
Brunswick, Ga.; July 22, 2006. In the ’70s,
Wright was a naval analyst with the Naval
Investigative Service. At UNC, he belonged to
Kappa Alpha Order and was in NROTC.
Thomas Sloan Young (’ 45), 82, of
Greeneville, Tenn.; Jan. 10, 2007. Young retired
as a data processing manager for a cotton company in Memphis. In retirement, he worked
for Outdoors Inc., a retail company. He served
as president of the Greenville Rotary Club. In
WWII, he was in the Navy.

been elected to the board of trustees for Brevard College. Harriett Lewis Clark (’ 57

take another championship, winning the Open
Class in the Boykin Spaniel Society’s Upland
Field Trial. Bruce Aaron Coats (’ 52
ABED) of Benson, a longtime coach at Cleveland and then South Johnston High before his
