president of the Forsyth County UNC Alumni
Club. At UNC, he belonged to Sigma Phi
Epsilon. William Ancrum Lord (’ 45), 83,
of Chapel Hill; March 9, 2007. Lord practiced
law in West Palm Beach, Fla., for many years,
moving to Chapel Hill in the early 2000s. A
veteran of WWII, he belonged to Delta Kappa
Epsilon and Gorgons Head Lodge at UNC.
Annie Ray Moore (’ 47 MPH), 100, of
Greensboro; April 9, 2007. Moore spent much
of her career with the World Health
Organization, serving in Burma, India,
Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and other countries.
James Edgar Nimmons Jr. (’ 43), 85, of
Danbury, Conn.; July 10, 2006. Nimmons was
in product management. In WWII, he served
in the Signal Corps in radio intelligence.
James Richard Owen Jr. (’ 49 BSCOM), 82,
of Forest Acres, S.C.; March 31, 2007. Owen
was employed in the life insurance business.
He served in Europe with the Army in WWII
and earned five Battle Stars. He served as president of the Mid-Carolina Mental Health
Association. At UNC, he was Di Senate clerk
and a student legislator. William Robert
Page (’ 42), 84, of Jacksonville; March 3, 2007.
After operating a wholesale business for a
number of years, Page joined Jefferson Pilot
Life Insurance and became a division manager.
Among his many civic activities, he was mayor
of Jacksonville and chairman of the fundraising
committee that helped move the battleship
USS North Carolina to Wilmington. In W WII,
he was a naval aviator and received the
Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal
with two Gold Stars. Dr. George Stephen
Pankey (’ 48 AB), 84, of Cashiers; Feb. 22,
2007. Pankey practiced dentistry in St. Cloud,
Fla., for 38 years. Previously, he was a civil
engineer. He served in field artillery in the
Army in WWII. At UNC, he was a member of
Sigma Chi. James Harold Patterson (’ 47),
80, of Lake Worth, Fla.; May 25, 2006.
Patterson retired as an educator for the state of
Florida. At UNC, he belonged to Pi Kappa
Alpha. Hugh Hayes Perry Jr. (’ 42), 85, of
Wrightsville Beach; March 26, 2007. In retirement, Perry was the owner and operator of a
pizza restaurant in Wrightsville. Previously, he
was town clerk of Wrightsville Beach and the
community’s first town manager. In WWII, he
served in the Army Air Forces parachute regiment and received a Bronze Star. Harry
Francis Phillips (’ 49 AB), 83, of Annapolis,
Md.; March 6, 2007. Phillips was a chemist,
working as superintendent of technical services
with the federal Bureau of Engraving and
Printing. In WWII, he was an Army medic. In
retirement, he was a Meals on Wheels volunteer. Franklin Willard “Bud” Potter
(’ 40), 89, of Mercer Island, Wash.; Nov. 14,
2006. Potter retired as chairman of the board
of a printing company. He was president of the
Mercer Island Library Board and a director of
the Seattle Science Center Board, and he
received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy
Scouts. He served in the Army in WWII and,
at UNC, was a Sigma Chi. George Francis
“Spriggs” Ralston (’ 40 AB), 89, of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; March 2, 2007. Ralston was dean
emeritus of Wilkes University, which was
Bucknell Junior College when he started
there. He held numerous administrative positions at the university and was a member of
the faculty. In 1946, he started the Wilkes athletics program, where he was football coach for
10 years and also coached basketball and baseball. He served with the Army in WWII in
North Africa and the Pacific. He received two
Purple Hearts. At UNC, he was on the baseball and football teams and belonged to
Golden Fleece and Order of the Grail. Dr.
Robert Ray Rascoe Jr. (’ 44 BSMED, ’ 44
CMED), 84, of Wynnewood, Pa.; March 13,
2007. Rascoe was a physician and taught in the
department of obstetrics and gynecology at
University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
Hillery H. Rink Jr. (’ 47), 81, of Thomasville;
Feb. 9, 2007. Rink worked for Cannon Mills
and its associated companies for many years
and continued when it merged with Amazon
Cotton Mills. He had various executive positions, including treasurer of Amazon and vice
president of Cannon Insurance Agency. In
WWII, he served as a pilot in the Navy. Dr.
Shirley Louise Rivers (’ 48, ’ 46 AB; ’ 48
CMED), 81, of Phoenix; Dec. 22, 2006. Rivers
spent much of her professional career with the
Red Cross in Tucson, Ariz., where she was
director of the Southern Arizona Red Cross
Blood Center. Earlier in her career, she was a
clinical associate professor at Emory University
School of Medicine, a research associate at the
Veterans Administration Hospital in Atlanta
and an assistant professor at the Georgia State
University School of Allied Sciences.
Landon Haynes Roberts (’ 42 AB, ’ 48
LLBJD), 85, of Asheville; April 28, 2007.
Roberts was a lawyer with Roberts & Stevens
law firm. Among his professional honors, he
was inducted into the General Practice Hall of
Fame of the N.C. Bar Association Foundation
and was made a Justice Fund Honoree by the
N.C. Bar Association. He was in the Navy in
WWII, serving in the Pacific. At UNC, he
belonged to Beta Theta Pi and was on the staff
of The Daily Tar Heel. Thomas Albert
Ross Jr. (’ 47), 80, of Madison, Miss.; Feb. 10,
2007. Ross retired as a certified public
accountant, then became a vice president and
trust officer at Trustmark National Bank. He
served on the State Board of Public
Accountants and as president of the Mississippi
Society of Public Accountants. Nancy
McClendon Sale (’ 46 AB), 81, of Shreveport,
La.; Feb. 14, 2007. Sale was an elementary
school teacher and active in many civic organizations in Shreveport. At UNC, she belonged
to Pi Beta Phi. John Robert Sharp (’ 47
BSCH), 83, of Sagamore Beach, Mass.;Aug.
18, 2006. Sharp retired as an account manager
with DuPont. He was in the Navy in WWII
and, at UNC, belonged to the Glee Club.
Dr. James Henry Shell Jr. (’ 43 CMED), 86,
of Baltimore; Feb. 25, 2007. Shell, a retired
obstetrician, delivered more than 5,000 babies
during his 40 years in medicine. He had a private practice and served on the staffs of several
area hospitals. One Christmas Eve, he delivered
seven babies at five different hospitals, according to family members. In WWII, he served in
the Army Medical Corps. Robert
McDavid Smith (’ 42 AB), 85, of
Birmingham, Ala.; Sept. 11, 2006. Smith was a
lawyer who had argued cases before the U.S.
Supreme Court. Among his numerous affiliations, he belonged to the Ford Foundation and
was on the board of the University of Alabama
Law School Foundation. He served in the military in WWII and received the Bronze Star.
At UNC, he belonged to Sigma Alpha
Epsilon. William Lester Smith (’ 42, ’ 47
BSCOM; ’ 49 LLB), 87, of Kinston; Oct. 20,
2006. Smith was an officer in an investment
banking firm. In WWII, he was a bombardier
in the Army Air Forces. At UNC, he belonged
to Delta Theta Phi. Grady Erastus Stone
(’ 42 AB), 86, of King; Feb. 6, 2007. Stone
retired as an elementary school principal. In
WWII, he served in the Army. Dr. Edgar
Chew Sweeney (’ 41, ’ 44 AB; ’ 47 CMED),
87, of Charlotte; Dec. 5, 2006. Sweeney
retired as a pediatrician. He belonged to
Philanthropic Society and Gorgons Head
Lodge at UNC. Eleanor Tapp (’ 44 MA),
95, of Princeton, W.Va.;Aug. 30, 2006. Tapp
retired in 1973 as a history teacher at High
Point Central High School. Ruth Emily
Franke Trevathan (’ 47), 82, of Greenville;
March 22, 2006. For 30 years, Trevathan was
actively involved in a thrift shop she’d organized to provide clothing for those in need. She
was a local chapter organizer for the Sierra
Club. She served as a WAVE in research at the
School of Aviation Medicine in Pensacola, Fla.,

(’ 42 AB), 86, of Palm Springs, Calif.; March 1,
2007. Ulman was a lawyer who retired as
president of a land development company that
