“Mac” Secrest (’ 49) of Chapel Hill, former
editor and publisher of The Chronicle in
Cheraw, S.C., and a professor of journalism at
UNC and NCCU, has been inducted into the
N.C. Journalism Hall of Fame. Secrest was a
crusader against segregation and served as co-chair of the Community Relations Service in
the Johnson administration.

J. Harold Austin (’ 40, ’ 41 AB), 91, of
Charlotte; March 19, 2007. Austin retired from
Allied Chemical Co. He was a pilot with the
Army Air Corps in WWII, flying 41 missions
in the China-Burma-India area. He received
the Distinguished Flying Cross. At UNC, he
belonged to Kappa Sigma and was on the
baseball team. John Roger Brooks Jr. (’ 43
BSCOM), 84, of Kinston; March 2, 2007.
Brooks, who retired as co-owner of tobacco
warehouses, served in the Navy in WWII. He
belonged to Sigma Chi and Delta Sigma Pi at
UNC. Betty Brown Cain (’ 47 CPHN),
83, of Sumter, S.C.; March 4, 2007. Cain was a
public health nurse for the S.C. Board of
Health. For many years, she trained and supervised midwives and later cared for tuberculosis
patients. Ronald Alva Cain (’ 49), 80, of
Richmond,Va.; Dec. 4, 2006. Joseph
Harold Conger Jr. (’ 43 AB), 85, of Edenton;
March 29, 2007. Conger was president of a
Texaco distributorship. Among his civic activities, he was a town councilman, served on the
electric and water board and was a charter
member and president of the Chowan Kiwanis
Club. He was a volunteer weather recorder for
the U.S. Department of the Interior for many
years. Recently, he received the Order of the
Long Leaf Pine and the Family Heritage
Award. In WWII, he served in the Navy and,
at UNC, belonged to Sigma Nu. Olive
Cranston Conley (’ 44 AB), 83, of
Dunwoody, Ga.; Feb. 12, 2007. Conley was a
vice president and buyer for the family’s World
Bazaar Stores. In retirement, she volunteered
with Meals on Wheels. At UNC, she belonged
to Pi Beta Phi. Benjamin Ashley Cox (’ 47
BSCOM), 80, of Dunwoody, Ga.; Sept. 18,
2006. Cox served in the Navy in WWII.
Floyd McCoy Cox Jr. (’ 44), 84, of
Washington, N.C.; June 4, 2006. Cox was a
retired salesman. William Otto
Cunningham Jr. (’ 44), 81, of Katy, Texas; July
15, 2006. Cunningham was retired president of
Cunningham Pharmacies. At UNC, he was on
the track team. James Henry Darden Jr.
(’ 41 AB), 88, of Atlantic Beach; March 26,
2007. He was an auto dealer and, for a number
of years, manager of Pitt-Greenville Airport.
He was the owner/operator of the flight
school that taught many pilots for the Vietnam
War. In WWII, he was a flight instructor, test
pilot and fighter pilot for the Army Air Corps.
He flew 125 combat missions in the China-Burma-India area, serving as operations officer.
He received two Distinguished Flying Crosses

National Young Farmer of the Year. At UNC,
he belonged to Phi Gamma Delta. Dorothy
Fay Dunn (’ 46 MSPH), 96, of Urbana, Ill.;
March 6, 2007. Dunn retired as regional program manager for consumer affairs with the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration. She also
was a faculty member at the University of
Illinois, University of Western Kentucky and
University of Wisconsin at Stout. In WWII,
she served as a commissioned member of the
U.S. Public Health Service. I. Jackson
Edwards Jr. (’ 49 ABJO), 82, of Greenville;
April 8, 2007. Edwards retired as owner of the
University Book Exchange. Earlier in his
career, he was placement director at East
Carolina University. He served as governor of
his Rotary District and was a Paul Harris
Fellow. The Greenville-Pitt County Chamber
of Commerce named him Citizen of the Year
and Small Business Leader of the Year. He also
was named Man of the Year by the Boy
Scouts. In WWII, he was in the Army and, at
UNC, belonged to Phi Gamma Delta.
Lester Philip Etter (’ 42 BSCOM), 86, of
Lebanon, Pa.; Feb. 18, 2007. Etter owned
Lebanon Broadcasting, operating radio, television and cable stations. Among his activities, he
was chairman of the Good Samaritan board of
trustees and was elected to the Hall of Fame
Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters. He
served in WWII, in the Army’s Rainbow
Division. At UNC, he was a member of Tau
Epsilon Phi. Henry Irving Gifford (’ 49),
91, of Durham; Dec. 14, 2006. Gifford served
in the field artillery in WWII. Mary
Virginia Gillam (’ 42 MA), 92, of Windsor;
March 10, 2007. Gillam taught Latin and history for more than 50 years, almost 40 of those
at Chatham Hall preparatory school in
Chatham,Va. William Bernard “Barney”
Happoldt Jr. (’ 41 PhD), 90, of Dover, Del.;
Aug. 5, 2006. Happoldt retired as an international marketing manager with DuPont.
Ernest Lee Hicks (’ 48 BSCOM), 84, of
Raleigh; March 4, 2007. Hicks retired as vice
president of corporate services with First
Citizens Bank and Trust Co. In civic activities,
he was on the board of directors of United

Way of Wake County and the advisory board
of Lenoir Rhyne College. In WWII, he served
with the Army Air Forces in the Southwest
Pacific. At UNC, he belonged to Delta Sigma
Pi. Otis L. Holland Jr. (’ 43 BSCOM), 85,
of Greensboro;April 21, 2007. Holland retired
as a broker and general agent with an international insurance company. Previously, he
worked as a fabric salesman for Burlington
Industries, primarily serving the New York
market. He was in the Navy in WWII, serving in Germany, France, Africa and the
Mediterranean. Curtis Buck Hunter (’ 43),
87, of Greensboro; March 30, 2007. Hunter
retired as a staff supervisor after 41 years with
Southern Bell Telephone. In WWII, he was an
aviation radioman with the Navy, serving in
the Pacific. He lived in Fayetteville until 2006.
At UNC, he was a dormitory counselor.
Harry Moseley Jones Jr. (’ 41 AB), 86, of
Winston-Salem; April 3, 2007. After a career
with AT&T, Jones volunteered at the Crisis
Control Ministry. In WWII, he was in the
Army Signal Corps, serving in the Pacific.
Dr. Thomas Cleveland Kerns Jr. (’ 46 AB),
81, of Durham; March 11, 2007. Kerns was an
ophthalmologist, practicing at McPherson
Hospital and serving on the faculties of Duke
University Medical Center and N.C.
Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. He was
chairman of the N.C. Commission for the
Blind. Kerns served as chief of ophthalmology
at McDill Air Force Base while serving in the
Air Force. At UNC, he belonged to Gorgons
Head Lodge and Phi Delta Theta. Gilbert
Gary Leonard (’ 49 BSCOM), 84, of Raleigh;
April 16, 2007. Leonard retired as supervisor of
accounts receivable for Carolina Power &
Light (now Progress Energy). In WWII, he was
in the Navy as a radioman on the coast of
Brazil. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from
UNC. Jack Muller Lindenzweig (’ 44),
84, of Greenville, Texas; Sept. 18, 2006.
Lindenzweig served in the Army in WWII,
after which he farmed. David Howard
Lineberger Sr. (’ 49 BSCOM), 81, of Chapel
Hill; March 17, 2007. Lineberger worked as an
insurance agent and established his own agency
and also worked in the automobile industry.
While living in Kingstree, S.C., he served on
the town council and was president of the area
Boy Scouts. In Chapel Hill, he was chairman
of the county Republican Party. At UNC, he
played on the baseball and football teams as a
freshman before serving with the Army Air
Corps in W WII. Charles Roscoe Linville
(’ 49 BSCOM), 85, of Winston-Salem; April
15, 2007. Linville was president of Hine-Bagby
Co., a retail clothing store, and owned the
Thruway store. He was a radar specialist in the
Army Signal Corps in WWII. He had many
