At Home With
Heels in Turkey
Carolina alumni gathered on a warm
spring evening in May to reminisce
about the Rathskeller, the Porthole and
other Chapel Hill favorites. They met on a
rooftop bar that offered a great view of
downtown.

Turkey Carolina Club held its annual
spring social. Though several alumni sent
their regrets, the five members who
showed up at the Tepe Lounge had a
great time gazing at panoramic views of
historic and modern-day Istanbul.

Club leader Lynn Baucom ’ 85 founded
the club after he moved to Turkey in 2005
and wanted an easy way to connect with
other alumni. In addition to enjoying each
other’s company, Baucom said the group
also discusses more serious issues, such as
how to raise Carolina’s profile in Turkey;
tens of thousands of students leave the
country each year to study in the U.S.
“We plan to contact the UNC admissions office to lend our support in getting
more Turkish students to go to Chapel
Hill,” Baucom said. “We also believe UNC
needs to take a more active role in
encouraging international students to
attend.”
The group discussed how to reach more
alumni and when to hold future events, at
which point Mert Askin ’02 (MBA)
offered to host the next gathering at his
restaurant, Kosebasi. The Turkish eatery
was voted one of the top 50 restaurants in
the world, and Time magazine named it
the best kebab house in Istanbul. ■
