exhibitor in the President’s House Through the
Eye of the Artist, a show at the Clinton Library
in Little Rock, Ark. The Timberlake painting,
The White House at Christmas, is on display

Dr. Laurence Sidney Alspaugh (’ 55 DDS),
76, of Greensboro; Jan. 7, 2007. Alspaugh was
in private dental practice for more than 40
years. He served in the Navy Dental Corps
and the Naval Reserve. At UNC, he was a
member of Phi Kappa Sigma. H. Thomas
Andrew (’ 50 BSCOM), 80, of Siler City; Feb.
5, 2007. Andrew retired as a factory representative and marketing manager with The Boling
Co., a chair manufacturer. He was active in his
church and with the Lions Club, among his
civic activities. In WWII, he was in the Navy
in the Pacific. John MacFarland
Barnhardt (’ 59 AB, ’ 61 LLBJD), 69, of
Concord; Dec. 4, 2006. Barnhardt was CEO
and chairman of an advertising and marketing
agency that he founded. For a number of
years, he was partner in a law firm. Among
many volunteer activities, he was a volunteer
for Meals on Wheels and served as president of
its board. He was an officer on the planning
and zoning board, president of the Concord
Downtown Development Corp. and president
of the board of the county Chamber of
Commerce. At UNC, he was a Morehead
Scholar and belonged to Pi Kappa Alpha, Phi
Eta Sigma and, during law school, Phi Delta
Phi. Bobby Mose Bolinger (’ 59), 74, of
Durham; Dec. 31, 2006. Bolinger was a projects manager in the construction industry. In
the Korean War, he served in the Navy.
George Drafts Boozer (’ 53), 76, of
Lexington, S.C.; Jan. 22, 2007. Boozer retired
as public relations director for the South
Carolina Brick Association. He was instrumental in forming the Richland-Lexington
Cultural Council and was a founder of the
Lexington County Arts Association, for which
he wrote shows and musicals and served as
director. He was a medical technician with the
Army and, at UNC, was president of the
Drama Association and a member of Kappa
Alpha, Order of the Old Well and Playmakers.

Thad Stevens Bostic (’ 58 AB), 70, of
Deland, Fla.; Aug. 29, 2006. Bostic retired as
vice president of a land title research company.
He served in the Navy and Navy Reserves
and, at UNC, belonged to Kappa Alpha Order

Pittsboro; Feb. 3, 2007. Bryan owned accounting offices in both Sanford and Pittsboro. He
was a member of the town board of commissioners and served as mayor pro tem. He was

Knoxville, Tenn.; Jan. 1, 2007. Buckner was the
Overton Professor of forestry emeritus at the
University of Tennessee, where he taught for
more than 40 years. T. Warren Burns (’ 51
MAED), 84, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; Dec.
30, 2006. Burns retired as vice president of the
educational division of Encyclopedia Britannia
Corp. Prior to that, he was a high school basketball and baseball coach. In WWII, he was an

Byrd Sr. (’ 58 MPH), 77, of Greenville; Jan. 7,
2007. Byrd was professor emeritus of the
School of Allied Health at East Carolina
University. He also served in administrative
positions for the university. He received the
school’s Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his leadership in developing the environmental health program at the university and
leading in the establishment of rural health
centers in eastern North Carolina. Ralph
Edward Carter Jr. (’ 51 BSPHR), 80, of
Wilmington; Feb. 16, 2007. Carter was a pharmacist and owner of Carter’s Pharmacy for
more than 35 years. In retirement, he was a
pharmacist for the health department. He
served 10 years on the New Hanover County
Board of Health and served in the Army during WWII. At UNC, he was president of his
pharmacy class for two years and a member of
Rho Chi. Colien Long Day (’ 55 MED),
79, of Marysville, Calif.; Nov. 28, 2006. Day
taught English in several high schools in North
Carolina and California prior to her retirement. Penelope Jarrell Fitch (’ 55 MSLS),
74, of Clemson, S.C.; Dec. 26, 2006. Fitch was
a librarian, working at the Library of Congress
and the N.C. State Library, among others. She
served as chair of her church’s Altar Guild and
on the city election board. Alfred Charles
Glosson Jr. (’ 51), 81, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.;
Jan. 14, 2007. Glosson retired from Duke
Energy and was an Army veteran of WWII.
L. Bruce Gunter Jr. (’ 54), 76, of Fuquay-Varina; Feb. 2, 2007. Gunter was an officer of a
mortgage banking company. He was in the Air
Force in the Korean War. Charles Henry
Hambright (’ 57), 72, of Fayetteville; Nov. 29,
2006. Hambright retired as a vice president of
operations for Libby Owen Ford. He served in
the Marine Corps. Carrie Dixon
Hamilton (’ 50 BSCH), 78, of Florence, S.C.;
Feb. 2, 2007. Hamilton was a chemist in the
paper industry early in her career. She was a
founding member and past president of the
South Carolina Dance Theatre and president of
the women’s organization of her church.
Stephen Jasper Harding Jr. (’ 53), 76, of
Clayton; Jan. 24, 2007. Harding had a private
practice as a chiropractor for 43 years. He was
in the Navy during the Korean War and was a
member of Sigma Nu at UNC. William
Eugene Hill (’ 54), 77, of Durham; Feb. 22,
2007. Hill retired as sales manager for Brame
Specialty Co. after 33 years of service.
James Ford Hughey Sr. (’ 51 MSPH), 79, of
Gastonia; Jan. 21, 2007. Hughey retired after 32
years of veterinary practice, then became a real
estate broker and developer. Among his civic
activities, he was a member of the Gaston
County Mental Health Board and chairman of
the Lenoir Rhyne College Development
Board. He served in Italy in the Army after
WWII and was a Navy captain in the U.S.
Public Health Service Reserve. Dr.
William Cebert Jarvis (’ 58 DDS), 80, of
Archdale; Dec. 3, 2006. Jarvis, a dentist in
Archdale for 39 years, was a past Grand Master
of Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity and past
president of the High Point Dental Society. He
was a Navy veteran of WWII. Jerry
Jerome Johnson (’ 57 MED), 74, of Raleigh;
Feb. 13, 2007. Johnson retired as a salesman
and manager of the Raleigh office of a commercial plumbing supply company. He served
in the Army. Dr. James Joel Leonard (’ 53
AB), 74, of Lexington; Jan. 2, 2007. Leonard
practiced medicine in Kentucky, California
and Lexington. In Lexington, he also was
county coroner. He received a community
service award from the VFW and an award
from President Nixon for service on the draft
board. He served in the California Army
Reserve National Guard Medical Corps.
Robert Ernest Lowry (’ 58 AB), 74, of
Raleigh; Jan. 13, 2007. Lowry was employed by
the Foreign Service and served in Peru. He
received the Meritorious Honor Award for his
work in Peru. He was founder and permanent
honorary president of the National Press Club
in that country. He was an Army veteran.
