CAT’S CRADLE
“Like Gillian Welch. I
keep thinking this is the
last time she’s going to
play this venue, but she
keeps coming back. It says
a lot about the venue.”
People come to the
club, Heath says, because
they want to stand right
there and get sucked into
the music.
“It happens in tons of
places. But it definitely
exists here, even though
it’s not the same crowd
every night. People come
to one show, and they get
the vibe of it. They have a
respect for the band, for
the place, and they want to carry it forward.
“Everybody loves rock music when
they’re growing up, and the longer [the
club] exists, the more history and texture
there is to the place. What’s great about it is
giving people the opportunity to go see
something that’ll make them happy.”
Former owner Bill Smith agrees. “I
DANIEL COSTON
remember we’d have these great bands and
people would be dancing on tables, and I’d
think, ‘You’re going to go home and be a
pharmacist, but I had you dancing on tables
one night.’”
Swing dancers came
out to see the
Zippers, finding
space where they
could back by the
bar.
