at UNC-Greensboro, has received the 2006
North Carolina Award for Literature. Parker
has written novels and more than 20 short stories and has won the Pushcart Prize, the
Goodheart Prize for Fiction, the O’Henry
Award and the Sir Walter Raleigh Award.
’ 85 Dr. Thomas Lee Mason (’ 85
AB, ’91 MD) of Cornelius, a partner in Mid-Atlantic Emergency
Medical Associates and chief of staff for Lake
Norman Regional Medical Center, has been
named 2006 Emergency Physician of the Year
by the N.C. College of Emergency Physicians.
Arlen Lowrey Pegg (’ 85 BSBA) of
Meridian, Idaho, is the leader of the newly
formed Idaho Carolina Club.
’ 86 Bradley Lee Daugherty (’ 86
AB) of Asheville has been named
a NASCAR analyst, hosting the
NASCAR Pit Studio Show on ESPN. Details,
page 69. Dr. Randy Gerrel Fussell (’ 86
BSBIO, ’ 90 DDS) of Greenville, a partner in a
dental practice, has received the Boys and Girls
Clubs of America Medallion. Fussell also has
been awarded a fellowship in the American
College of Dentists.
’ 87 Laura Willes Bowers (’ 87
ABED) of West Jefferson, media
coordinator for Westwood Elementary School, has been named N.C. Media
Coordinator of the Year. Brian Daniel
Carroll (’ 87 ABJO, ’03 PhD) of Rome, Ga.,
has published When To Stop Cheering: The Black
Press, The Black Community & The Integration of
Professional Baseball, a book that focuses on
coverage by black sportswriters and their relationship to the Negro Leagues, including officials, players, team owners and fans. Pamela
Anne Covais (’ 87 AB) of Los Angeles has
been promoted to vice president of production
for September Films USA. Sallie Lee
Krawcheck (’ 87 ABJO) of New York has
been named to run Citigroup Inc.’s wealth
management business, which includes the
Smith Barney brokerage unit that she ran until
two years ago, when she had been named
CFO of Citigroup. Krawcheck also was named
the sixth-most powerful woman in the world
by Forbes in August. The GAA presented her
with its Distinguished Young Alumna Award in
2003.
