Salisbury; Oct. 12, 2006. Goble retired following a long career in education, many of those
as an elementary school principal. He was
named a Melvin Jones Fellow by the Lions
Club and served on the Salisbury Community
Appearance Commission. Joseph Ferrell
McCann (’ 76 CGRED; ’ 84, ’ 83 EDD), 67, of
Salisbury; Nov. 1, 2006. McCann retired as
superintendent of the Rowan/Salisbury
School System. He spent more than 30 years
as an educator and was active in a number of
N.C. educational associations. John
Hardin O’Neal Jr. (’ 76), 52, of King; Dec.
28, 2006. O’Neal was a real estate appraiser.
Earlier in his career, he was a partner in a
Chapel Hill real estate, appraisal and auction
company. At UNC, he was a member of the
football team.
’ 77 David Neal Allen (’ 77 AB, ’ 80
JD) of Charlotte, a litigation partner
with Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP, has been elected to a three-year term
as a bar councilor for N.C.’s 26th Judicial District. Michael Darnell Petty (’ 77 AB, ’ 87
MPH, ’ 87 JD) of Thousand Oaks, Calif., has
joined Amgen as vice president and associate
general counsel for FDA/regulatory matters.
Mary Lynn Wilson (’ 77 MSLS) of Chattanooga, Tenn., courtroom deputy in U.S.
Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of
Tennessee, has been appointed the first historian for the National Conference of Bankruptcy Clerks.

MSRA) of Candler, principal at

has been named Haywood County Principal
of the Year for the second consecutive year.

Community College, has received a Presidential Excellence in Leadership Award from the
college for her role in the formation of the

Elson Sylvester Floyd (’ 78 AB; ’ 83, ’ 82
MED; ’ 84 PhD) of Columbia, Mo., who
served as UNC executive vice chancellor from
1995 to 1998, has been named president of
Washington State University in Pullman. Floyd
will take office in July. D. Carmichael
“Mike” McIntyre II (’ 78 AB, ’ 81 JD) of
Lumberton, congressman from N.C.’s 7th District in the U.S. House, has been named Distinguished Christian Statesman of the Year for
2006 by the Center for Christian Statesmanship.
Michael Rollan Smith (’ 78 JD) of Chapel
Hill, dean of the UNC School of Government, has been named vice chancellor for
engagement. Smith’s role will be to serve as
an advocate and facilitator for greater campuswide engagement with North Carolina in
education, health care and economic development. Ann Houston Williams (’ 78, ’ 77
PhD; ’05 CERT) of Durham, field studies
coordinator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Human Studies Division in
Chapel Hill, has been elected president of
Sigma Xi, the international honor society of
science and engineering.
