Oscar Cuthbertson Jr. (’ 74 MA) of Charlotte, head men’s and women’s tennis coach at
Johnson C. Smith University, has been named
a campus recreation sectional award winner
for the southern region by the U.S. Tennis
Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Thomas Cox Edgerton (’ 74 BFA) of
Greensboro, portraitist, served as a judge for
the Lee County 2006 Brush and Palette
Show. Patricia Freeman Hawkins (’ 74
AB) of Durham has been named pastor at
Oxford United Methodist Church. Angela
Butner Hunter (’ 74 BSPT, ’06 MPH) of
Rocky Mount, a physical therapist and owner
of Physical Therapy for Women’s Health LLC,
has opened a new office, in Sunset Towers.
’ 75 William Noble Starling Jr. (’ 75
BSBA) of Portola Valley, Calif.,
CEO of Synecor LLC, a business
generator of new life-science companies, has
received the 2006 BSBA Alumni Merit Award
from the Kenan-Flagler Business School
Alumni Association. Primarily responsible for
raising more than $300 million in private and
public capital for companies he has co-founded, Starling is a private investor in more
than 40 startup companies. Stephen Jennings White Sr. (’ 75 AB) of Charleston, S.C.,
has been promoted to director of the Karpeles
Manuscript Museum, which houses historically
significant manuscripts. Cynthia Leigh
Wittmer (’ 75, ’ 74 AB) of Raleigh, a partner in
the antitrust and business torts practice group
of Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP, has
been elected a bar councilor in N.C.’s 10th
Judicial District.

Cole Charles Campbell (’ 75 AB), 53, of
Reno, Nev.; Jan. 5, 2007. Campbell was dean of
the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada in Reno. He had been assistant city editor at The News & Observer and
also an editor with the Greensboro News &
Record, St. Louis Post-Dispatch and The Virginian-Pilot. He was a fellow at the Poynter Institute
for Media Studies. At UNC, he was editor of
The Daily Tar Heel, was a Morehead Scholar
and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Other activities included the Order of the Golden Fleece,
Order of the Grail, Philanthropic Society and
the debate team. A memorial service was held
in his honor on the UNC campus in early
January. Joyce Lockhart Farris (’ 75
MSLS), 80, of Durham; Dec. 12, 2006. Farris
was a catalog librarian at Duke University’s
Perkins Library. For more than 40 years, she
was recording secretary of the American Theological Library Association. Robert
Buckner “Buck” Hall Jr. (’ 75), 53, of
Mocksville; Nov. 14, 2006. Hall was an environmental health specialist with the Davie
County Health Department. He served on
the board of the county United Way and was
a volunteer with the Boy Scouts. He was
70s
president of the Davie County Carolina Club.
John Anthony Moggio (’ 75 BSBA), 53,
of Miami; Oct. 23, 2006. Moggio was a certified public accountant. He was a founding
member and coach of the youth soccer program in Palmetto Bay, Fla. Robert
William Winn Jr. (’ 75), 53, of Lewisville;
Oct. 31, 2006. Winn was an information systems specialist. Also, he was a musician and
pilot.
