college football player as an undergraduate, he
was inducted into the Guilford College Athletic Hall of Fame. In WWII, he served in the
Marine Corps and remained in the Reserve for
several years. Billye Robbins Goree (’ 59,
’ 66 AB), 74, of Durham; Dec. 15, 2006. Goree
was an accountant. She worked for many years
to create two autistic group homes in Durham.
Shepherd Russell Grist (’ 52), 77, of Washington, N.C.; Nov. 25, 2006. Grist was principal of a junior high school for more than 20
years. After he retired, he was assistant superin-
tendent of Beaufort County schools. He served
in Germany with an Army National Guard
unit. R. Wilkins “Wink” Hamill III (’ 59,
’ 60 AB; ’ 63 LLB), 69, of Suwanee, Ga.; Nov.
17, 2006. Hamill was a commercial real estate
broker with Meridian Realty in Greensboro,
prior to his retirement. Earlier in his career, he
was director of real estate for Duke University,
then president of Richardson Corp. of Greensboro. At UNC, he was president of Phi Kappa
Sigma. Benjamin Carroll Hedgpeth (’ 55),
74, of Wilmington; Dec. 28, 2006. Hedgpeth
managed a number of restaurants in Chapel
Hill and owned others in Wrightsville Beach.

Hill Jr. (’ 52 BSBA, ’ 58 JD), 76, of Greensboro; Dec. 2, 2006. Hill was a partner in the
law firm of Hill Evans Jordan & Beatty. He
was president of the 18th Judicial District Bar
and chairman of the board of law examiners of
North Carolina. He served in the Navy and
continued with the Naval Reserve for many
years. At UNC, he belonged to Chi Psi and
was on the freshman basketball and baseball
teams. William Gilchrist Hill (’ 57 BSBA),
75, of Winston-Salem; Nov. 20, 2006. Hill
retired as payroll department manager, following
a long career with Pilot Freight Carriers Inc.
He was active with the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem and the Winston-Salem Rose Society. He served in the Coast Guard and, at UNC,
belonged to Delta Sigma Pi. Margaret
Alexander Hudson (’ 56 MSW), 86, of
Eugene, Ore.; June 11, 2006. Hudson retired as
a social worker. Marian Rose Janski (’ 53
MED), 79, of Arlington,Va.; Nov. 24, 2006.
Janski was a guidance counselor and teacher of
English and social studies in the Arlington
schools. She was one of the charter faculty
members at Williamsburg Junior High. John
Robert Kennedy (’ 58 MPH), 93, of
Huntsville, Ala.; Nov. 15, 2006. Kennedy retired
as general administrator of the health department of Butler County, Ohio, and continued
living in Ohio until 2003. He was stationed in
Papua, New Guinea, during W WII.
William Nathan Kingoff (’ 52 BSBA), 76, of
Wilmington; Dec. 21, 2006. Kingoff owned
two jewelry stores, in Wilmington and in
South Carolina. Among his many civic activities, he held leadership positions in the Downtown Wilmington Association, B’Nai Israel
Congregation, New Hanover County Human
Relations Commission and the Salvation
Army. At UNC, he was a member of the track
team and Pi Lambda Phi. John Edward
Kirkman III (’ 50 AB), 80, of McLean,Va.;
Oct. 7, 2006. Kirkman was a retired executive
with Field Enterprises Educational Corp. in
Chicago. Harold Cooley Mahler (’ 53, ’ 59
LLB), 75, of Greensboro; Dec. 2, 2006. A partner in Frazier, Frazier and Mahler law firm,
Mahler began his career as in-house counsel
for an insurance company. His civic activities
included leadership positions on the Watershed
Committee and the Guilford City Planning
