president of the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association. A scoutmaster for 20 years
and an Eagle Scout, he received the Boy Scout
Silver Beaver Award. He served as a representative in the N.C. General Assembly in the ’70s
and for 16 years was a volunteer wrestling
coach at Goldsboro High School. In WWII, he
was in the Army Air Corps. At UNC, he was
captain of the wrestling team, chairman of the
Carolina Political Union, and a member of
Delta Kappa Epsilon and the football team.
H. Gustav Maass (’ 46 BSCOM), 83, of West
Palm Beach, Fla.; Oct. 23, 2006. Maass was a
partner in the law firm of Alley, Maass, Rogers
and Lindsay PA. He was founding president of
the Palm Beach County Junior Bar Association
and president of the Palm Beach County Bar
Association. In WWII, he served in the Navy.
At UNC, he was captain of the varsity tennis
team, president of Delta Kappa Epsilon and
Beta Gamma Sigma and a member of Order
of Gimghoul, Order of the Holy Grail and
Order of the Golden Fleece. He graduated Phi
Beta Kappa. Rachel Sangster Martin (’ 49
BSLS), 88, of Greenville, S.C.; Nov. 27, 2006.
Martin was head librarian emeritus at Furman
University. Previous library positions included
Florida State University and Mary Baldwin
College. She had various officer positions with
the American, Southeastern and South Carolina library associations. Roderick Edgar
McCaskill (’ 44), 87, of Blowing Rock; Nov.
22, 2006. McCaskill retired as a colonel after
30 years in the Air Force. He served in both
WWII and the Vietnam War. Among his
awards were the Legion of Merit,Vietnam Service and Air Force Commendation medals.
Following his military retirement, he was an
executive with Northrop Corp. in Saudi Arabia. Grace Brewster McConnell (’ 45 AB),
81, of Wynnewood, Pa.; July 26, 2006.
McConnell, a retired educator, was in the Navy
Waves in WWII. She was an aerographer,
trained in weather observation. At UNC, she
was a member of Chi Omega and president of
a women’s residence hall. Julian Armand
McKenzie Jr. (’ 49 BSCOM), 82, of Jacksonville, Fla.; Oct. 13, 2006. McKenzie retired
from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida. For
more than 30 years, he was an ACC football
official. In WWII, he served in the Pacific in
the Navy. At UNC, he was co-captain of the
track team and won several mile and two-mile
races. He belonged to Sigma Nu. Earl Victor “Pat” Patterson Jr. (’ 40 BSCOM), 87,
of Baton Rouge, La.; Nov. 15, 2006. Patterson
was a partner in a road construction company
for many years, and then was a budget officer
for the city and parish of Baton Rouge. He
was named a lifetime honorary member and
national director for Associated General Contractors of America Inc. He was an aviator and
flight instructor with the Army Air Corps in
WWII. At UNC, he was on the track team,
was head cheerleader and belonged to Kappa
Alpha. Gales Pickard Perry (’ 43, ’ 48 AB;
’ 51 MAED), 85, of Durham; Nov. 5, 2006.
Following a military career, Perry was a real
estate broker in Chapel Hill. He served in the
Army Air Corps in WWII with the Flying
Tigers in China, Burma and India. He also
served in the Air Force in the Korean and
Vietnam wars, retiring as a colonel. At UNC,
he belonged to Phi Delta Kappa. Dr. A.
Dwight Price (’ 49 AB, ’ 54 DDS), 84, of
Sneads Ferry; Nov. 12, 2006. Price retired as a
dentist in Chapel Hill. He taught part time at
the School of Dentistry for several years. Following service in the Navy in the South
Pacific in WWII, he became a member of the
first dental class at the UNC School of Dentistry. After his move to the N.C. coast, he was
a volunteer ambulance driver for Topsail Island
Emergency Services, among other activities.
He was an ordained minister of music in the
Southern Conference of the Methodist
Church. At UNC, he was head drum major
for the Marching Band and bell ringer of the
Bell Tower. He belonged to Omicron Kappa
Epsilon and was president of Psi Omega.
Dr. Corbett Latimer Quinn (’ 49 AB, ’ 51
CMED), 80, of Magnolia; Dec. 16, 2006.
Quinn was in family practice in Magnolia. He
was president of the Duplin County Medical
Society, chief of staff of Duplin General Hospital and county medical examiner, among many
commitments to the medical profession. He
was in the Army in WWII and served as surgeon general of the N.C. National Guard. He
served as mayor of Magnolia, and president of
the board of the volunteer fire department and
the community memorial foundation. In 1974,
he received the Distinguished Service Award
from UNC’s medical school. At UNC, he
belonged to Phi Chi. Edward Tyler
Rollins Jr. (’ 43, ’ 47 AB), 84, of Durham; Nov.
5, 2006. Rollins was president of the Durham
Radio Corp. and president and publisher of
the Durham Herald Co. in the 1980s. He
retired as chairman of the board of directors in
2004. He was president of the Durham YMCA
and served on the boards of Salvation Army,
Durham Public Library and Durham Chamber of Commerce. He served in the Army in
WWII. Ray Gerald Rutter (’ 45), 84, of
Youngwood, Pa.; June 8, 2006. Rutter was senior vice president of Youngwood Electronic
Metals. Stacy Crockett Scales (’ 41
BSCOM), 86, of Martinsville,Va.; Nov. 6,
2006. Scales retired as executive director of
CONTACT, a crisis intervention telephone
service. She was president of the Charity
League, among other activities. At UNC, she
belonged to Pi Beta Phi and Beta Gamma
Sigma. A senior class officer, she served as permanent class secretary-treasurer. Edith
Dunn Shaffer (’ 48 AB), 81, Indian Rocks
Beach, Fla.; Nov. 18, 2006. Shaffer and her
husband were involved in missionary work,
traveling to Mexico 43 times. She volunteered
with Meals on Wheels in Florida and North
Carolina. Early in her career, she was a secretary for the psychology department at UNC.
Jean Riden Steele (’ 49 MA), 85, of Dover,
Del.; Nov. 10, 2006. Steele was a librarian and a
high school languages teacher during her
career. She translated Japanese in the mid-
1940s. She was active with the Delaware
Choral Society and taught a course in Braille
transcribing. Verona McCrary Thomas
(’ 44 BSLS), 89, of West Columbia, S.C.; Nov.
7, 2006. Thomas, a librarian, served two tours
with the Peace Corps following retirement.
She was a Peace Corps librarian in St.Vincent
and a Peace Corps English teacher in Hungary. Wendell Edwin Townsend (’ 46 AB),
83, of Maricopa, Ariz.; Oct. 11, 2006.
Townsend retired as a math and science
teacher, then continued as a substitute teacher.
For many years, he worked at the Arizona
State Fairgrounds in security. In WWII, he
was in the Navy. John David Waldroup
(’ 45 BSCOM), 80, of Carmel, Calif.; Nov. 17,
2006. Waldroup was the developer and owner
of a shopping center in Carmel. A CPA, he
was an officer in investment companies earlier
in his career, managing offices in the Philippines, Japan and Korea. At UNC, he was senior
class president and a member of Delta Sigma
Pi. He was permanent president for the class
of ’ 45. Rhoda Hunter Wynn (’ 49 MA),
84, of Chapel Hill; Jan. 26, 2007. Wynn was a
longtime community leader and an assistant
professor in UNC’s former department of
radio, television and motion pictures. She was a
founder of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA,
and she was chairman of the board and vice
president of the YMCA Southeast region of 11
states and the Bahamas. She served as president
of the Chapel Hill Community Council,
which established the Chapel Hill Public
Library. After serving as administrative assistant
to Paul Green for 15 years, she became executive director of the Paul Green Foundation.

’50s H. David Bruton (’ 57 AB,
’ 61 MD) of Carthage, retired
pediatrician and former secretary for the N.C. Department of Health and
Human Services, has been honored as the 2006
