It will house the
Y’s programs cen-
tered on a commit-
ment to the pursuit
of social justice, now
involving some 1,500
students. The office
of the executive
director of the arts
and part of its staff
will be on the top
floor. The basement
will be a Starbucks
opening onto a side-
walk cafe on the
west side. A landing
on the back side will
give the Y an open-
ing onto Polk Place
that wasn’t there
before.
“This building was
a dumping ground
for so long, people had lost track of what it
could be,” said Virginia Carson ’ 71, the Y’s
director. The University allocated $1.5 mil-
lion in renovation and repair funds for the
remake, and private donors added twice that.
Much of the interior character has been
restored. Removal of drop ceilings in the
entrance hall revealed a heart-pine coffered
ceiling. Arched doorways were found behind
other make-do additions. Heart-pine floors
were restored. Finials were put back on the
pyramid roof where they’d once been.
Carson has watched the rebirth carefully, and she’s wary of the Y becoming too
elegant. “The Y’s sort of a funky kind of
place, and it’s gonna stay that way,” she
promised.
