Those Championship Seasons
A team dominated by New York boys, whose
home court was in Woollen Gym, and another
with two national players of the year that
rocked Carmichael Auditorium, came to the
Smith Center in February for a memorable afternoon. The 1957 national championship team
takes its bows, represented above,
left to right, by Assistant Coach
Vince Grimaldi, Pete Brennan ’ 58,
Tommy Kearns ’ 58, Danny Lotz ’ 59,
Joe Quigg ’ 57, Tony Radovich ’ 57,
Lennie Rosenbluth ’ 57 and Bob
Young ’ 57. From the 1982 champs,
Sam Perkins ’ 84, James Worthy ’ 83
and Michael Jordan ’ 86 watch wistfully as their exploits are replayed on video. And
Coach Roy Williams ’ 72 leads the current edition in an ovation for those who came before.
Brennan, Kearns, Rosenbluth, Perkins, Worthy
and Jordan all have their jerseys hanging in the
rafters, and now a new banner commemorates
the perfect season of ’56-’ 57 and that team’s
coach, the late Frank McGuire.
