Friends in All Places
It's all about who you know - and who they know. Carolina alumni now can easily track and engage not
only their old school pals but even the friends of their
That might sound suspicious, but consider this:
You're moving and your best friend's former roonunate
is close friends with an alumnus who lives in that neighborhood you're considering.
Or your daughter is consider-
ing a small school in another
region of the country, and a
quick search shows that your
friend has a friend who
teaches there and can give
your child the inside scoop.
TarNation, which debuted
March 29, takes the GAA
online directory to a new level. Alumni can search for
other alumni on the basis of many variables at
alumni.unc.edu/tarnation and can contact friends in
their nerwork quickly via e-mail. The GAA has e-mail
addresses for more than 115,000 alumni.
In its first month, TarNation spawned a few thou-
sand invitations, and the number of registered online
users rose by about 10 percent to more than 33,000.
GAA members can take full advantage of TarNation,
but nonmembers also benefit. Members develop their
networks by sending invitations to other alumni asking
to be recognized officially on
the site as friends. Each recipi-
ent must confirm the offer to
become an official friend of
the sender. Non-members still
can accept or decline invitations from TarNation and view
their established nerwork.
Tarnation was a student
humor magazine at UNC in
the '40s and '50s. The magazine
featured cartoons, photographs
and articles satirizing campus events and personalities.
TarNation also was the headline last year on a St. Louis
Post Dispatch edition conceding that the Heels had
indeed overtaken their town. Now TarNation is another
way to get the most from your Carolina experience.
