Jud Campbell's favorite research - genealogy - is extracurricular to an academic career that earned him a Marshall Scholarship.
Jud Campbell: The Joy of Detective Work
If you askJud Campbell about his honors thesis research on the Israeli- Palestinian peace process, be ready to
listen carefully. He speaks softly, but he
can give you quite a lesson in the Middle-Eastern conflict and its significance to the
rest of the world.
As he talks about the disintegrating
political coalition governing Israel's
parliament during the 2000 Canlp David
summit, Can1.pbell's enthusiasm for all things

every now and then you find somebody
who is so much more, I don't know,
adventuresome than we can picture our
lives being today - people who came here
when there was no society and who basi-
cally had to start things by themselves."
As a freshman, Campbell began taking
clients for his own genealogical research
business. It was through one of these that
he became interested in Charles Gerrard,
an 18th-century benefactor of the Univer-
sity for whom Gerrard Hall is named.
Campbell is writing an article on Gerrard's
