With unemployment rising, many job seek- ers are feeling panicked by today's tight
job market. More than ever,job-hunting
requires alternatives to help-wanted ads or
Internet postings. The bottom line to getting
a position is personal contact.
The good news is that Alumni Career
Services has an extensive network ofalumni
who have volunteered to help other alumni
access information and explore career options.
The Alumni Advisor Network consists ofmore
than 5, 100 UNC graduates who are ready and
willing to share valuable career information
based on their personal experiences. Alumni
seeking networking assistance can get a list of
others who share their career interest in their
targeted city. To request a list of alumni advisers,
just go to the Web site at alumni.unc.edu and
click on career services, then go to networking
and fill out the form. You will receive your list
of advisers in the mail in about a week.
N ow, the bad news is that most people don't
know how to use this network effectively.
When job seekers ask how I can help them, I
suggest starting with the network. In many
cases their response is, "I can't ask complete
strangers for a job," or "How many interviews
do you guarantee?" Networking is not about
asking everyone you know for a job or looking
for guarantees. It is not surprising that these
folks are not getting the results they want.
Alunmi should understand that advisers, like
most primary contacts, probably will not be able
to provide employment opportunities. But they
are people who know people, and they are the
people you want to knOw. Even if their com-
pany isn't hiring, these contacts are in a posi-
tion to refer you to other people who have
information about jobs before they are adver-
tised. They also have information about trends
in the industry, the culture in their companies
and what it takes to be successful in their
field. They are a source ofinformation and
wisdom; they know what you should expect.
To get the most out of networking, it is
important to appear confident and curious
rather than needy and desperate. Learn to dis-
cuss your situation positively. Have a solid
career goal that reflects what you want to do
and what role you want to play. Know your
worth and how you can add value. Develop a

about you. Don't
call your contacts
and say that you are looking for a job and
expect them to come up with one. Also don't
expect your contact to tell you the job for
which you are best suited.
Effective networking is about building rela-
tionships. Smart job seekers realize that net-
working is something you do in good times as
well as bad. It involves developing a wide range
of associates, talking to people and making
contacts outside your existing industry or pro-
fession. It also means taking a sincere interest in
the people you meet; everyone is a potential
networking lead. Learn to ask open-ended
questions to find out what people do, how
they got into their field and what experience
they've found helpful.
You can expand your network and gain
visibility by volunteering, which can help you
build credibility as well as meet new people.
You can demonstrate your strengths and impress
people with your motivation, flexibility and
work ethic. Just be sure to make the volunteer
position work for you; do things you enjoy.
Improve your networking results by contact-
ing everyone you know and following up with
the people to whom they refer you. As one of
my former clients said, "My best friend's hus-
band has a cousin who has a friend at FoxSports
who put me in touch with her bosses, and I
interviewed with them. One of the guys who
interviewed me gave me the name of a guy at
Turner. I called that guy, and he put me in
touch with the fellow who is now my boss
- sum total, seven people that I networked
with to find my job. So be persistent. Take a
name and run with it. There's no telling where
it'll lead you."
