Five friends of the University have received the annual William R . Davie awards, the highest award given by UNC's Board of Trustees rec-
ognizing extraordinary service to the University or to
Erskine B. Bowles ' 67 of Charlotte was chief of
staff to President Clinton from 1996 to 1998 after
heading the Small Business Administration under
Clinton. Bowles, who is seeking the Democratic
nomination for the U.S. Senate, has led the N.e.
Rural Prosperity Task Force, a group that suggested
ways to strengthen rural North Carolina's economy.
John W. Burress III ' 58 of Winston-Salem serves
on the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer
Center's board of advisers and the University's
National Development Council. His gifts have
helped renovate the House Undergraduate Library
and have created two professorships. He established
the John W Burress III Faculty Fellowship and the
John W Burress Faculty Research Endowment in the
Kenan-Flagler Business School.
