R and, a veteran legislator noted for his
leadership in the N.G Senate, earned his
bachelor's degree in political science and,
in 1964, his law degree. He is a past chair
of the General Alumni Association and
has volunteered in a variety of University-
related efforts, including the boards of visitors of the University and the Lineberger
Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Wagoner earned three UNC degrees:
bachelor's and master's in nursing as well as
a doctorate in physiology. She is president
and chief executive officer of ICAgen Inc.,
a biopharmaceutical company that is a
leader in ion channel drug discovery technologies. Following a postdoctoral fellow-
ship in UNC's pharmacology department,
Wagoner worked at the Glaxo Research
Institute before forming ICAgen.
The Distinguished Alumna and Alum-
nus awards, first presented in 1971 to
alumni who have distinguished themselves
in a manner that brings credit to the Uni-

versity, evolved from the presentation of
an honorary degree to immediate past
UNC President Edwin A. Alderman (class
of 1882) in 1906. Drawn from nomina-
tions from various entities on campus,
recipients are recommended by the fac-
ulty's Cornnuttee on Honorary Degrees
and Special Awards and are approved by
the Faculty Council and the trustees.
University Day was created to com-
memorate the laying of the cornerstone
of Old East on Oct. 12, 1793.
